Can you install a msata 2242 ssd into a P52 WWAN slot?

#1 Post by baertracks » Sat Jun 29, 2019 8:19 pm

I'm configuring my new P52 ThinkPad with multiple drives, including a 2.5" 4TB Samsung 860 Pro, a 1TB Samsung 970 Pro M.2 NVMe and a 2TB Samsung 860 EVO M.2 NVMe.

Just for fun I thought that I would install a 1TB Samsung 860 EVO m.2 2242 msata SSD into the WWAN slot. I purchased that drive, but it doesn't look like it will fit. The WWAN space has "one screw" and the 1TB Samsung 860 EVO m.2 2242 msata SSD has "two screw holes". Also, the pins don't look like they would match. Do I need a different product? I've done a number of Internet searches and can't seem to find a definitive response as to whether this sort of installation if possible.

Has anyone else has tried and succeeded in installing a msata 2242 SSD into a P52 WWAN slot? If so, what product did you use? And did you have to do anything special within BIOS to get the SSD recognized?

Thanks! -FRANK (Baertracks)

1. It's possible that it only supports M.2 2242 NVMe SSDs.
2. It's just as possible that it doesn't support SSDs at all -- you already have 3 in your laptop.
Planned Purchase: T480s i5-8350 FHD Touch
Impulse Buy: Thinkpad not named for safety reasons

If you have another computer that has M.2 2242 SSD in it, perhaps you can temporarily remove it, and stick it into your P52 to see if it works!
(Apparently no one on this forum had tried to see if it works on P52).

In theory at least, it a "2242" sized M.2 SSD "should work" in your P52 WWAN slot.

I received and installed a 480GB MyDigitalSSD SBX NVMe SSD today, and it works fine. It looks like it is running slower than expected, but for my purposes (data storage) that's not an issue. Thanks!

Now all you need is a 1 TB SD Card (which costs an arm and a leg) for your almost maxed out P52,
and then your P52 will feel complete ;)

Thanks for posting! More storage slots are always good news.
