My SECOND W540!

#1 Post by Dragunov » Sat Jun 29, 2019 8:50 pm

Got this one off Ebay also, for $15 more than the first one! This one seems to be an "A" grade, has 3k display, an i7-4900mq CPU, K2100m graphics, and comes with 32gb/ram already! Couldn't pass it up. He has more, if anyone is interested.

Can't wait to get it home! :D

Wow, a nice price for W540 !
ThinkPads are addictive ;)

Don't forget to buy AC adapter (charger), as the webpage as per your URL link clearly stated "Does not come with charger" when we saw it today.

I already have a few 170w, and 150w chargers, so it's not a problem! :)

Anyone who has wanted a W540, should jump on this! They apparently have several.

Well, after having the NEW W540 for a few days, here's what I think about it, and some observations.

This one has the factory clickpad.... Guess what? I like it better than the T450 pad that's in my first W540. I don't ever use the trackpoint, so the shortcomings with that, and the clickpad, are a non-issue.

BOTH of these machines have:

1tb Samsung 860 EVO for the C: drive
500gb Samsung 860 EVO for the D: drive. EDIT:: Both now have 1tb Samsung 860 Evo drives, for the D: drive.
SuperBoot2 M.2 for the E: drive. (one is 240gb, the other is 480gb).
Both have PCI Express, 2xUSB 3.0 ports
Both have nVidia K2100m graphics
Both have 32gb Corsair Vengeance, PC3-14900 1866 SODIMMS

The only significant differences are:

The first W540 has a 1080p display, the new one has the 3k display. There is ZERO eye strain with the 3k display. No matter how long I'm on it. :D
The first W540 has an i7-4800mq CPU, the new one has the i7-4900 CPU.... And yes, there is a noticeable difference in speed, when ran side-by-side.

My new W540 is faster. The display is better, and I actually LIKE the clickpad, as I've learned how to use it.
The i7-4900 seems to run a little cooler than the i7-4800, even after re-pasting the XX-4800.

The new W540, just runs smoother, snappier than the first one. I'm pleased as punch with the i7-4900mq for sure, and will continue to use it as my "DD". Not sure what I want to do with the first one. Maybe keep it as a backup, or sell it. Not sure yet. Had I'da known how much better the XX-4900 ran, I would've just upgraded the processor in the first one.... Well, Then I wouldn't have TWO then, would I? :P
