Stop Gmail asking: Want to leave the page....

#1 Post by RealBlackStuff » Fri Jul 12, 2019 1:33 am

Lately Gmail has been pestering me with an irritating popup "This page is asking you to confirm that you want to leave - data you have entered may not be saved".
To stop this nonsense:

In PaleMoon (Firefox derivative) I went to about:config
search for: beforeunload
double-click on:
dom.disable_beforeunload to set it to true
dom.require_user_interaction_for_beforeunload to set it to false
Worked for me, no more warning pop-ups.

This also works in Firefox.

I also posted this on the Google forum.

Maybe I'm a bit confused, but how does using this in Pale Mood or Firefox help us using Google???

This is to stop Gmail (and some other websites) nagging you, not Google per se.

This feature sometimes misfires, but it does have the potential to stop you from accidentally navigating away and losing entered form information...

My solution to webmail interfaces is not to use them.

I've used Thunderbird for many years to interact with all my email accounts because webmail interfaces annoy me. On Windows I use Thunderbird Portable so I can copy the program folder including all saved messages and burn to DVD (malware can't write to a finalized DVD) as backup.

It's free and you don't have to log out of one webmail account to use another. You can also use Outlook or other clients if you prefer. You can also run a copy from a USB drive which I found handy at work.
