Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
I recently acquired a T23 in pretty good all round condition. I'm trying out a dual boot setup with Windows 7 and Antix Linux. The latter seems to work fine, with no issues as yet outside of the distro's own little quirks. The Windows installation has also surpassed expectations in some respects, booting up a bit quicker than it does on many more advanced machines and loading internet pages at an acceptable speed.
However, I'm unable to get any sound in Windows. The volume icon is present in the system tray, but when the mouse pointer is hovered over it, there is a message 'No Audio Output Device is installed'. On the assumption that this was probably a driver issue, I scoured the net, but could only find one site which claimed to offer a Win 7 audio driver for the T23. It looks very dodgy indeed to me, offering the driver for free, but requiring me to sign up with them and provide my credit card details. Probably a scam, and I wasn't that desperate....
More likely perhaps that no driver exists for this, with the T23 being introduced about seven years before Windows 7 arrived. One thing that puzzles me is that I'd have thought this would have been a fairly common question in the past, but I've looked at a lot of the T23 Windows 7 threads, and not a single mention of this issue. So I'm maybe barking up the wrong tree and missing something which ought to be obvious.
By the way, here's a link for that 'T23 driver' offer: http://omlkyt1972.cba.pl/t23-sound-driv ... -bits.html
It also says Windows 7 64 bit... Maybe t23 here nothing to do with the IBM laptop?
Edit: So, is it actually possible to get sound working on this setup?

You can run Windows 7 on this computer. Just use the Windows 2000/XP drivers for everything, including audio.

Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
Thanks. I did try installing the Win XP audio driver, and nothing happened. Will give it another go, also maybe with the Win 2000 one.
Got to say though that W 2000 drivers for Windows 7 sounds like a bit of a long shot. The most I've got away with in the past is using a Vista driver in Win 7.

Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
Hmmmm......well, I've just tried installing both the Win 2000 audio driver and the XP one, and (not to my entire surprise) neither solution worked. To return to the earlier point about the numerous threads here which refer to Win 7 on the T23, there seem to be two possible main scenarios:
EITHER: 1) All or most of the posters in these threads have no issues with audio in Win 7, in which case there is an obvious solution which I'm failing to see.
OR: 2) The posters in the threads do not mention audio issues for the simple reason that there are no audio drivers which work for Win 7 on the T23. Wholly understandable, but still very odd (to me at least) that no-one has clearly spelled this out in dozens of threads which cover a period of over a decade.
Oh well....

Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
After downloading the drivers (W2K/XP) did you unpack them/run the setup from the appropriate location on your hard drive ? On older Windows driver installation for ThinkPads is usually a two-step process.

Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
I still have two T23 machines left, one with 1GB and one with 768MB RAM.
Both have been running XP for years without any problems (because they never go online, and they never get updated).

Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
Yes, as I recall the first step of the process placed the driver package in C:\DRIVERS\WIN\AUDIO and C:\DRIVERS\WXP\AUDIOErin respectively. I then 'navigated' to those folders double-clicked on the executables there, and a few seconds later was informed in both cases that the drivers 'may not have installed correctly' or similar, but received no further elucidation.
Anyway, thanks for the various opinions and suggestions, but I think I'm just going to have to admit defeat on this, at least for the moment...

Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
To be clear, I've never run a T23 before. I have a T22, which may be very different. I just thought I may be able to help since the systems are similar. I agree that a Win2k driver on 7 sounds like a long shot, but it works in some cases. Evidently not yours. I've no idea why it wouldn't be working.Summer Deep wrote: ↑Thu Jul 11, 2019 6:29 pmHmmmm......well, I've just tried installing both the Win 2000 audio driver and the XP one, and (not to my entire surprise) neither solution worked. Well, it just happens that the audio is one thing where T22 and T23 are different, although I have no idea why the older system would have working drivers on a new system and the newer one wouldn't.

I think in retrospect my earlier reply to you may have appeared a little ungracious (or even ungrateful). Please accept my apologies if that's the case. It wasn't meant personally, it's just that grumpiness is my default setting a lot of the time.TPActivator1511 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 12, 2019 7:56 pmTo be clear, I've never run a T23 before. Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
With only 1GB max RAM, a T23 is a poor choice to install Windows 7 on.
Regarding audio driver compatibility, AFAIK anything pre-Intel HDA (AC97 and older) doesn't have Windows 7 drivers. I remember trying out Win 7 on a non-Thinkpad Pentium M laptop and couldn't get audio working no matter what I did.

Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
Well as some of the only ppl using win 7 on T23, I can tell you I just used the driver that came with a clean non-OEM installation of a Windows Vista SP2 ultimate (Chinese) and it worked just fine. same can be said for infrared drivers. Unfortunately I am in China and my T23 and A3x devices are in Canada so I cant give you the driver. Just try to install windows vista sp2 on a spare hard drive and pull off the drivers from %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\driverstore\filerepositorySummer Deep wrote: ↑Thu Jul 11, 2019 3:15 pmThe most I've got away with in the past is using a Vista driver in Win 7.

Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
+1 for running W7. I was happy with its performance when I was using T23s but only when using an SSD via the necessary adapter. Some opined I was wasting my time when I posted about it at the time. The SSD use is is still reflected in my signature !
I am almost certain that the sound did work but I don't recall if I had any problems getting it to work so I assume it used the standard M/S W7 drivers. I presume that your Device Manager shows no driver loaded ?
Of course there were no video drivers also and this was, for me what drove me back to good old XP.

Re: Win 7 Audio Driver For T23?
The sound and infrared drivers came preloaded with Windows Vista, but removed in Windows 7 SP1. Digging the drivers from the installation of Windows Vista solves the problem.
The video driver is gonna be painful, as it doesn't even play well with hardware acceleration in Windows 7 (even Windows 7 Minesweeper has to run in CPU rendering mode). As a result animations are definitely not gonna be smooth, though smoother than having no drivers at all. This is using the official drivers for Windows XP. An A3x in Windows 7 fares much better because of this, as Radeon 9000 drivers can be substituted for those things.
This is still much better than T22 though, as the official drivers for that older video card in Windows 7 would trigger bluescreen every time you sleep or hibernate, and minesweeper wouldn't even launch.

Having done a spot of detective work in another part of this forum, I'm 99.9%+ sure that it was your T23 that I bought (plus another for spares?) .JBUK wrote: ↑Mon Jul 15, 2019 5:18 pm+1 for running W7. There was in fact no sound on the Win 7 OS as received (dual boot with XP on main hard drive). I actually wiped that drive to install my current setup. I'll have to look into the video driver issue....

You can always use USB sound to external speakers using ASIO4ALL drivers.
