x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
Although x61s with L7500 is pretty old machine, but it is very classic one, recently I were trying to do some search on the L7500 CPU overclock threads after replacement of SSD/Bios upgrade.
I found some interesting threads regarding somebody accidentally overclocked the CPU from 1.6g to 2.4g by changing the intel wifi card to dell 1506 wifi card.
I bought and installed dell 1506 card, initially I had hard time to boost the system with the original 667 DDR2, also this was mentioned from the thread, it was suggested to re-flash the SPD of the memory from 667/800 to 533. I followed the instruction to re-flash the memory to 533.
Now the X61s is stable at 2.2g to 2.4g, boost speed and operating speed got significant improvment, and also the heat/fan noise didn't get obvious increased, the right plam temp is improved a little compared with intel wifi card.
I am very satisfied with the upgrade.
(you need to upgrade bios before changing the wifi card)
I don't know how to attach a picture yet.Below is the change from CPU-Z reading.
FSB changed from 200 to 266
Core speed changed from 1.6g to 2.2/2.4g
other L7200/T8xxx also worked.

Correction on the cotent:
I tried both dell 1705 and dell 1506 card, both worked the same.

How does the Dell wifi card enable the FSB overclock?

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
it is controversal still so far, it is belivered that two pin on dell card connected and the change may impact on cpu clock logic.
the reason is not 100% sure yet.
many people bought the dell1506/1705 using 2 bucks, give it a try, many SUCceed and show cpuz score。
667/800meory is not comparable,.but doengrade 533 momory
can siolve

Don't worry, that is allowed. I don't see the forum's rules saying anything about linking to another forum, or quoting from another forum.
Apparently, it's some sort of a byproduct made from bridging pin 24 and pin 52 together on the Dell wireless adapter card. Just like what afraidfuture described, it makes sense.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Fri Dec 07, 2018 10:50 amHow does the Dell wifi card enable the FSB overclock?

that two pin you mnetioned should be the one discussed in the thread, i am very beginner of modification.
is there any simple explanation on this?

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
Thanks for your reply, it explained detail, looks like if old intel wifi card weld two pins together, it can work the same way.
the dell wifi card heat performance is better than the intel wifi card.
Now the right palm is not headache anymore, change out the dell wifi card is worth the "2 bucks".

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
i would like to do this mod on my X61s. I get the pin connecting piece and the Dell wifi card. What else is needed to overclock? The OP mentioned an upgraded BIOS? Will this mod work with the Middleton BIOS? Other than some BIOS upgrade, what are the other steps, if any?

Also, how can I tell what MHZ the CPU is running at? I'm running Fedora Linux. Thanks.

Wow. So much effect from so easy job. I'm getting a dell card to check it on mine X61

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
Ok here's my update: I tried this on both my X61 and X61s. Worked on the X61 not on the X61s.
Middleton BIOS
Dell DW1506
I happen to have 2Gb DIMMS that only go up to 533 MHz
Fedora Linux distro
X61 runs fine overclocked. X61s successfully overclocks but crashes often. I'm using the same RAM chips in both machines.

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
1. You can try increasing the voltage on the X61s.fri_night_in_ninsei wrote: ↑Fri Jan 11, 2019 9:19 amX61 runs fine overclocked. X61s successfully overclocks but crashes often. I'm using the same RAM chips in both machines.
2. Limit the clock speed (by setting a lower multiplier) to just slightly above the original speed. You'll still get a performance boost due to the faster bus clock and built-in graphics.

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
To lower RAM speed via SPD, which values do you change in SPD Tool? Some relevant looking values seem to be "min CLX-1 and "min CLX-2". Mine are currently 286 Mhz and 323 Mhz respectively and an overclocked X61s crashes with that RAM DIMM. But if I try to lower one or more of those two values with SPD Tool the write to SPD fails. If I try to write to SPD with the original values, the write succeeds. Any help is appreciated.

C1506 on it's way home, paid 2 EUR for it. Can't wait to try this on my X61/T7300.

Aaaaaaand... just four beeps, X61 won't post with c1506

I assume that Atheros AR9565 (aka AW1705) and AR5B125 (aka AW1506) will do the same thing or it's only works with DELL marked cards?

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
I think soldering a jumper in the mpcie slot is a much cleaner solution and doesnt lock you to certain wifi cards. Worked pretty well for me i just need to stabilize my ram now. https://valid.x86.fr/33j5vp

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
Bought the dell wifi card, but none of my ram chips can be read by spdtool or rw. I suppose they are locked.
Any Idea where I can find unlocked chips of 533 and 800 ram?

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
hi, just had a chance to do a performance comparison on two x61s machines.
Here are the results so far:
cpu........passmark avarage......pc2-5300s unchanged......pc2-6400 spd rewritten with dell wifi
l7500.......958......................1105..........................1447
l7300.......825......................989............................1355
the temps on l7300 are much lower than on l7500
tried on t8300 cpu but the machine didn't boot up (any ideas how to get it started?)
will try on other t series and will update

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
hi, as i am happy owner of X61s (using daily since i bought it about 6 months ago) i am interested in doing this. i ordered Dell DW 1506 wifi card and expecting in few days. as i dont know about moding and any electronic or technical things i have some questions below :
1- is this process safe? i dont wanna fry my mobo/ram/cpu because i have only 1 x61s.
2- is downgrading ram speed necessary? doesnt it work just by putting Dell wifi card in it?
3- should i put Dell wifi in WLAN port or WWAN?
4- i have 2x4gb Samsung DDR2 rams and i think they are not 533mhz, probably 800 or 667mhz, how can i find out if ram chips are locked or unlocked?
5- i dont know how to adjust Ram Mhz by SPT Tool. is there any guide or can somebody explain please?
simply could you please guide me how to do all the process?
thanks in advance-

Re: x61s L7500 overclock by installing dell 1705 wifi card
Can this DW 1506 network card hack only work on x61/x61s machines? What about the x60/x60s/x60t? I received a DW 1506 card, yesterday. A few days ago I put the l7500 motherboard back into the x61s, I had x60 Librebooted motherboard in it for years. After removing the heatsink and cleaning the fan, new thermal paste and thermal tape I've used it daily since, in preperation for the 1506. I tried several different sets of ram memory, but finally tried some Kingston 2GB PC2-6400s 666 800MHz sticks and wow, this really does work! Since I haven't used Windows since July 2011 I can't run any benchmarks, but I know that it's running the 2.4GHz or thereabouts. I actually installed Win 7 to a drive recently, no updates, but that is for Ivyprep only, x230.
