unusual problem after clean install win7 on W530

#1 Post by TinkerMan » Sat Aug 24, 2019 2:47 am

HELLO
so after installing at least 10 times windows 7 on various machines, like 3xT60, 6xT61, X230, I finally got my hands on an mSATA for my old trusted W530,so I Installed W10 on the old SSD to future proof it for 2020 w7 death, and after the mSata came in, I reinstalled w7 on that drive, W7 is so much better than w10 so I couldnt just gave up on it, yet.
So after X times installing w7 I hit a problem with my main machine, which is very frustrating, so the problem consists in the system being very very slow in youtube, gmail and ebay, so far, all other sites I tested run vry fast, very snappy, all the syetm is snappy and very responsive , when opening programs, when installing stuff, when doing updates, everything works much faster than before when I had the old stock lenovo w7 install, all with the exception of these sites, youtube gmail, ebay.
does anyone might have any idea what might be the problem?

HTML5 and the no-longer-use of Adobe Flash come to mind.
What browser are you using? That may also be a problem.

I use the exact same browser I used 2 days ago just before the clean install, mozilla firefox 68

also, could you please explain what you meant by no longer using adobe flash and html5? that was very cryptic and i didnt get a thing.

When W7 came out, HTML was the standard to build websites.
Around 2014 HTML5 was being pushed to replace HTML.
Many websites never changed the 'old' coding, they kept it same-old/same-old.
Either way, many add-ons were updated, many not or poorly.
That created some problems, that are not always obvious.
Browser development is of major interest, as that is what most people use.
Hence my question WHICH browser you use.

I posted about several browser problems in the W7 forum: viewforum.php?f=57
Have a look there.

Many youtube entries are quite old, made with the then-current add-ons, some of which are not so current anymore today.
Many others are made in a hurry and/or on older machines, so there is a huge variety possible.
If you have a problem, you try another browser, it's that simple.

Yes, of course, your question about which brower I use makes a lot of sense, but not quite in my case, the browser can't be the problem Since I use the exact same browser as before the reinstall, I use the same windows 7 64 bit and I use the same machine, the W530.
Also the videos I tested it were either a few days old on YouTube or 2 to 3years old max.
Also the same problem being sluggish or completely blocking appears on gmail and ebay, so 2 non video related sites.
I should probably mention Netflix and Amazon prime work perfectly. Also it doesn't matter what resolution I choose on YouTube, it may be 1080p or 360p it exhibits the same problems, the getting in full screen or getting out of full screen takes at least 10 seconds it may block temporarily the browser or, the same as jumping ahead or before with right and left arrows, it blocks the video and it stops downloading the video. None of these problems appear on Netflix and amazo prime video.

Is the msata drive functioning correctly? Disk I/O can cause slowdowns.

I thought about that too, but
samsung magician didnt find any problems with the drive, nor did avast cleanup which can scan disks for errors

I also reinstalled firefox twice, no change
I installed the latest adobe flash-player, no change

Have you used Samsung ssds before? For whatever reason, many have said they have more compatibility and performance issues with Samsung ssds, especially when upgrading from a hdd. Assuming your old ssd (that you used to first replace the hdd before the Samsung) was not a Samsung, you may want to look into trying a different brand ssd.

Wireless drivers. Sported it many, many times. This is actually a driver-to-system related issue; W10 will have no trouble running at full speed (not to mention that it will generally run better,, faster, more energy-efficient than W7 on this machine).
Try to switch to some higher-grade athreos; try out different wireless card, try to tinker with the drivers. You need to aim here. It has nothing to do with SSD.

Other than that: note that mSATA in this model works on... SATA-2, so it is SIGNIFFICANTLY slower than 2,5" SSD, no matter what brand. I found a crappy S*it Silicon Power SATA-3 SSD running much faster than SAMSUNG mSATA SSD in these machines.

Also take into consideration what I mentioned above: even though I personally feel that W7 is a good product (OK, as much as M$ is able to produce a good software) and W10 is not a finished product (yet) it has a great support on platforms with intel i-series gen.3 and above. I have worked it out on W530, T430s and X230. Longer battery life, better iGPU support, faster, cooler (W10 is already tinkered around to reduce/stop the system from sending outside data I don't want to be sent, you just need to dig a bit). AND sticking to W7 on new systems is actually kicking with the horse. You have lost this run before you take a first step.

ok, so now the plot is getting really thick
as I said I also had win 10 installed in the system which so far was performing perfectly, that was until 2 days ago when after using it the day before , nothing special, just browsing and watching some movies, i shut down the system for the night and when I woke up tried to start the system, again in win 10 and nothing, it would restart on its own right before the win 10 logo, and again would fail and restart again and again. tried to fix it with the installation drive but it didnt work, so finally I gave up and proceeded to reinstall win 10 on that drive. after install, the first thing I checked was to see if youtube , gmail and facebook worked properly, which they did, just like before reinstalling win 10, I installed several programs, like VLC, office 2016, 7 zip ... and I restarted the laptop, after restarting surprise surprise, youtube was now performing just like it did after reinstalling win 7 2 weeks ago, ok, so I thought it was the fault of one of the programs I installed, so I reinstalled from scratch again win 10 this time installing just VLC and malwarebytes, nothing more, again, right after install youtube worked perfectly, after the restart it didnt, again, I reinstalled win 10 , this time installed just VLC without its mozilla plugin, again it worked ok, after restart it didnt. next after reinstalling win 10 i didnt install anything else, except mozilla of course, again it worked perfectly, nothing installed now, not even VLC, I restart the laptop, again after restart youtube wont work properly.

so what the darn is going on, I am at a complete loss here.
as somoone said it might be the drivers, of which I too have thought bout, but than again, when I installed win 10 I didnt install any wireless drivers and youtube was working fine after each install, but not after the first restart.this situation makes absolutely zero sense. like WTF.

Meaning drivers I do not mean what you are trying to install. I mean what Windows tries to install. And that pretty much makes sense actually, as everything is applied after reboot. Try to disable Microsoft Update with services.msc command, and see if it works. If possible, try another wireless card.

What do you Consider to be the best driver for the W530 as far as wireless card goes? When you go to Lenovo support they have at least 3 drivers for wireless.

What I do when I am in a situation like yours is first to turn off firewall and AV to see if they are interfering.
Its always worth trying another browser as RBS says.
Or if I suspect a drivers issue and get desperate enough I run Driver Booster, the free version, as this will always find some later drivers. When its done uninstall it as its a bit invasive if left on permanently.

What Wifi adapter is it in the W530, an Intel N 6205 ? Is the mSata new ? If not have you TRIMMED it as this might help as might putting the page file on a faster device.
Just a few thoughts which may or may not help.
Where to begin......
