Thinkpad W541 - BIOS Chip Location

#1 Post by ball1nukra1n3 » Tue Nov 05, 2019 11:47 am

Traded a Dell Precision M6500 for a buddy's old W541, and I'm glad I made that trade, this thing ROCKS. So anyway, I'm new to the Thinkpad community here, this is the first one I've ever owned. I'm aware that there's pretty much no hope for coreboot on the W541 due to the Intel Boot Guard, but supposedly I can at least run the me_cleaner to disable ME on this thing and make it somewhat secure. Only thing is, I don't know where the BIOS chip is located. Can any of you tell me where I can find it, to pull the BIOS and clean it of ME? Thanks in advance

It has 2 BIOS chips, next to each other. Look on your motherboard for 8-pin chips that have numbers like:
(4MB chip): 25Q032
(8MB chip): 25Q064
They are marked SP11 and SP12 on the mobo, located near what looks like the SD-card reader.
NOT a great day for a Guinness! (the Real Black Stuff).
