Is this w700 worth buying?

#1 Post by KDM Mods » Sun Nov 10, 2019 10:49 am

I have the opportunity to buy I w700 from a buddy of mine in perfect working condition for around $235. It has a good battery and comes with the charger. Has a 8gb of ram, 2x250gb hard drives in raid 0, a intel x9100 cpu, and the better gpu the fx3700m. Is this worth it? I kinda feel like it is.

Thanks!

Yes. That's a good price for a great machine.

It says it has the 1920x1200 display. Is that the brighter more rare display?

And thanks for the reply. I think I’m going to go ahead and get it.

I don't know if it's rare, but it's a very good and bright TN display (the only ThinkPad display I've ever run at less than full brightness). Keep in mind it's CCFL and old, and replacements are extremely expensive. But if your buddy says it's in good shape, don't think twice.
And don't worry about the battery, this is a desktop replacement, and I doubt you'll take it anywhere often :)
The X9100 is very overclockable.
RAID 0 is nice, but an SSD is much faster.
Good luck!

Well I bought it. It’s going to be coming from Canada so it will be a week or two till it gets here. I’m pretty excited. I’ve always wanted one. Specifically with the second display, but I don’t want to spend $1700 for one.

Are you able to overclock from the stock bios? If so that’s very very cool. I’m sure it doesn’t stay “cool” though Image

I use ThrottleStop to overclock in a W500. I don't have a X9100 in my W700.

Are you sure? Only the W700ds or W701ds have two screens.
The "standard" W700/W701 only have one screen!

Yea. The one I bought only has the one display. I’ve just wanted a w700 in general though that’s why I jumped on this one.

You're right. Last time I checked I didn't find any at such a low price.

I received my w700 today. Holy cow it’s huge! I love it lol. The display is awesome and it’s very comfortable to use. Only issue is that one of the screen latch hooks is broken off. Any way to fix that or do you need a w700 specific latch assembly? Also, is it possible to add more than just the 9cell battery to it? Ultra bay battery or slice battery maybe?

Thanks!

I think the W700 had an ultrabay battery option, but I have doubts on finding a healthy battery that would hold a 90% charge after 2 months.

My W700ds had a 3rd party battery that would randomly die while in use in Windows 7.
I would think the W700 had its own screen latch part, but you may be able to salvage a T60/61 or W500 latch to work with it.
But if cost is too much of an issue I wouldn't bother.

Yea. I’m just hoping the other latch doesn’t give out. I’ve got a t410 parts machine but that’s too small. And this battery lasted me for about an hour of YouTube so I was happy with that. It dropped from 55% to 7% instantly lol. So a cell must be bad in it or something.
