Still possible to find a 1400x1050 T61p?

#1 Post by ThorOfAsgard » Tue Dec 03, 2019 4:53 pm

Never see them on eBay for sale, not even in completed items. I used to own one a long time ago, so I know they exist! Perhaps all of them had the Nvidia issue and they all died?

All 14" T61p have the Quadro FX570m 128 mb. I myself did acquire a 14" T61 with 1400x1050 resolution and NVS 140m, however, I transplanted that motherboard into a 15" T60 with 1400x1050 FlexView.

Nope. I even have one, fully working and running fine. Maybe I should at last rebuild it into a frankie.

These were pretty popular in Europe.

EDIT:

For a minute there, I was thinking "I have one". But, not so, mine is:

Code: Select all

ThinkPad T61	8892-01U
T7100(1.8GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD
128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless
Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro
So, not a "p".
Collection = T430 - T500 - R400 - X300 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - R61 (15" SXGA+) - T60 - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P

They exist. I still have one (Board was replaced by IBM with a safe one, Penryn Native, FX570m), and 14 (sourced in bulk on eBay a few months back) "safe" 4:3 T61p Merom boards.

Im building 1-2 T601s with the boards every months, but if you have a T61p with a dead board and want to replace it, let me know and I can send one to you.
P1 Gen 5
P52
T25 Anniversary

Many more as well!

Both the 14.1" board VRAM amount and bus width are half that of the 15.4" T61p board so the performance suffers in comparison despite both having a Quadro FX 570M and the same model designation. They do however share the same VBIOS, largely accounting for the improved performance over the similarly VRAM limited NVS 140M and making it the best candidate for the common easy-build frankenpads, subject to the usual NVIDIA qualifications.

Well, in 14-inchers there's not so much of a performance difference between nvs140m and fx570m, especially given that nvs140m is highly oveerclockable (while fx570m in 128Mb nerfed variation is not. At all). I wonder what's the power consumption difference as it definitely doesn't consume 35W. I think I will rebuild those two and counter them face-to-face in same specs.

Multiple shader and core frequencies are set in the VBIOS, largely accounting for the performance difference wrt the two 14.1" NVIDIA chipped boards and is the reason you can overclock the NVS 140M more.

I got rid of mine a long time ago. Have just been keeping a lookout for nostalgic reasons.
