Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2

Just ordered my Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 2 for college because it was cheaper than the T490 and better spec'd (although I don't know how I feel about 15" laptop) i bought it with i7-9750H 16GB RAM 256GB SSD and 1080p display and should arrive by next year(4 weeks Shipping is next year already darn!) .. Anyone have the extreme gen 2? How do you like it? I heard this is an x1 carbon but with dedicated graphics? Looking forward to studying A+ and gaming in college

I have an X1 4th Generation (not Extreme) new in 2016 and it works fine. i7 and 16GB of memory like you. Intel Graphics (my experiment with dedicated graphics on a T61 left me cold so I avoid that). 1 TB SSD NVMe drive. Be careful what you wish to keep on the 256GB SSD as you might find that confining. Keep important stuff on the SSD drive and less important stuff on a USB hard drive.

i'm already going to replace the 256GB SSD with a Samsung 970 Evo 1TB m.2 pcie drive it was cheaper by about $400 to replace it myself instead of order it from factory with 1TB SSD... 16GB ram was about the same price if it upgraded myself or order direct from Lenovo so just had Lenovo install 16GB (8GB x2) in the machine... all in all it is about $800 cheaper then my 2015 Macbook pro 13" and over twice the performance

I have an X1 Extreme gen 1, and it's my favorite Thinkpad by far. The GTX1050Ti is plenty to play my game at 1080p@60Hz, and the 4K screen is beautiful for doing work. I've been considering picking up a gen 2 as well for the newer GPU and the OLED 4K screen. That said, I'm sure I would have been happy with the 1080p screen. The GPU isn't powerful enough to run games in resolutions higher than that anyways.

While it is a 15" laptop, it's very thin for what it is. I'm pretty impressed they packed so much power into it. Battery life is fine for me as I mostly use it plugged in. I have other Thinkpads if I need a 12 hour cordless crotch warmer.

Mine came with a single 16GB DIMM, so I picked up a matching DIMM on Amazon for $60 to get dual channel memory. If it had had 2x8, I would have left it alone as 16GB is plenty, I think. I also replaced the SSD with a 1TB 970 EVO, which works wonderfully. There are two SSD slots, but I decided to just use the one.
