FS: 2x X201 units with AFFS LED screens

#1 Post by wujstefan » Sun Feb 16, 2020 6:08 am

I have two units for sale, modified with HV121WX5-111 panels (these panels come from HP tablets). These are LED AFFS panels with nice viewing angles and better contrast than stock thinkpad panels. I was trying to install thinkpad displays, but since LED strips from Monty are no longer available I have these two. Screens are mechanically thicker than stock X201 panels - this does not make a big difference apart from that the lid closes with a bit more force.

Unit #1:
i5-540m
no SSD/RAM/PSU - all caddies are in place
9-cell genuine battery with ~60% charge left is included
DE keyboard layout
The panel itself has some flaws, but nothing that disturbs my eye much
Wireless switch is blocked in "always on" position due to the switch damage on the motherboard.
Other than that, the general shape is somewhere between glorious and fantastic.

Price: $219

Unit #2:
i5-560m
no SSD/RAM/PSU - all caddies are in place
WWAN-loaded
9-cell genuine battery with ~90% charge left is included
US keyboard layout
The panel is error-free as far as I can see, but has some a bit darker areas - impossible to catch on pic, and not disturbing during work but for a well-trained eye they are somewhere in there.
Other than that, the general shape is better than the above unit.

Price: $269

(after inspecting the pics: boy, I am a terrible photographer!)

I can reconfig those units if needed. Removing keyboard if you do not need it will also cut the cost.

Backlight is a bit uneven, there are 2 or 3 dust specs under the layer - that's pretty much it. Impossible to catch on picture, but all I could is in the folder of shared pics.

The unflawed unit has been sold.

Hello. I have an X201 and HV121WX6-110 (which has same pins with your WX5) but pins are completely different. How did you connect the panel?

Uh... it's been like 7 years since I've done it, and I had literally zero love for these devices... sorry, but I simply do not remember how it actually looked like.

I’ll add my experiences attempting this mod (I failed) since info is very scarce on the web. Basically, there’s a bunch of LED AFFS 1280x800 HYDIS screens. The vast majority will have a 40 pin connector with .4mm pitch. This is what the screen I used had. What I wish I knew was that there is a handful of screens with a .5mm pitch, that will work with an adapter off AliExpress. What these models are, I forget, but you can do some digging on panelook. I had kfzhu on the forums here attempt the mod for me since my soldering skills are quite terrible. I sent him a snipped X20xT cable (it’s not a flex cable, literally just a collection of wires) and he attempted to solder them directly to my X20x LED cable. The wires used in the X20xT cable are shielded (I think that’s the term he used anyways) so they were a pain to solder. He did successfully solder them all after a long time, and the screen was functional for about 5 minutes. Then, something shorted and fried my cable and I think the LVDS connector on my motherboard.

I think I’ve posted about this mod before a long time ago, and I linked to the adapter that I’m talking about in a previous post. I don’t have time to search for it as I’m writing this unfortunately. Hopefully this info is helpful.
