when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
Seems to me it will be good for my purposes for years to come. Is Windows 10 going to be the killer? I use w7 and Linux now, but suppose I should upgrade to w10 eventually. I only use W for one or two things

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
I installed Windows 10 1909 on a T420s with an SSD the other night and it seemed pleasant. The Windows Store didn't require an account login to install Lenovo Vantage, and Vantage didn't require a prerequisite to install.
T410's chipset is sufficiently fast and modern as a baseline. First gen Core i is competent, 8GB DDR3 is cheap and better than the minimum 4GB, any SATA SSD works, decreasing quantity of healthy original batteries will hurt in a few years, LCDs are kind of low resolution but I wonder if the T420 FHD / QHD mods work on the T410 as they share an LCD connector, they wouldn't fit in the lid well though.
It will be obsolete and useless only if it cannot serve the purposes you want from it.

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
We have many T410s with the i5-520m in service at a few of our clients, all with the latest and regularly updated Windows 10 build, with 8GB and a 240 GB SSD. They were brought in to retire HP 4520s and TP E520s which were literally falling apart at the seams. They perform respectably considering their age and we don't plan to rotate them out of service for another few years - and even then, they will be kept on as loaners.

I'm using a T410 every day for Office, browsing and some website editing. It is snappy enough and works perfectly.
Daily driver since 2011: T410, i7-640M (formerly i5-520M), 8GB RAM, EVO 860, 1440x900, Windows 10.

Windows 10 1909 runs on T60/R60 Generation and newer. I own T60, T61, X61s, X61 Tablet, X200, T400, X220 and T42.
As long as you have a SSD built in and 8 GB RAM you can use your T410 the next years as long as browsing through the web does not become painful slow due to CPU capacity.
Windows 10 comes with most fitting drivers for the devices and missing drivers can be replaced by packages dedicated for Windows 7 and Windows 8.x.
Small hint concerning Lenovo Vantage:
After selecting it for download just close the appearing login dialog and wait a few seconds. Download will start automatically then. - The login is optional only.

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
Take care with Lenovo Vantage because it has a large footprint, can be a resource hog and reports back to Lenovo. In my experience, it is not needed and best avoided.

i still have several T410 lying around at the office, and they still working well with W10 for office usage, email, youtube, almost all that we need.

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
IMHO T410 limitations are mainly 8GB RAM (low-density), as it's impossible to fit 16GB on those systems, and insufficient GPU for some of the modern software like SketchUp etc. Besides those two - still very nice and reliable computer. I'll keep it if i had it already, but if I were up to buy one, I'll go for T420 or T430 instead.

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
Well, I've never suggested that. I belive T410 to be a great machine, and in general I like to stick with old hardware as well. It's just not being able to go any higher then 8 GB to be a significant disadventage IMHO.

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
My T410i which is a lower screen resolution i5 version of the T410 still flies with linux mint.
I guess it will even work fine with windows 10.
If I had to buy a replacement it would be a T420 for the reasons already mentioned by others.

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
My main quirk with these 14"/14.1" laptops from this era is its inferior LCD quality. While I don't have any 14/14.1 ThinkPads in widescreen, I have attempted the WSXGA upgrade on a Latitude D630 whose screen was broken anyways, and even then the result is just barely passable for my eyes (LP141WP1-TLC2 which actually has 300:1 contrast ratio and okay horizontal viewing angles). While something like my ThinkPad T530 and Latitude D830 can be upgraded to at least 900p/WSXGA+ for not much more and you have far better picture quality at the same time. I really don't care about the size as long as it fits in my backpack.

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
14" T420/430 come in two flavors:
HD WXGA 1366x768
HD+ WSXGA 1600x900
When the first one is undoubtedly unbearable, the second one is... well merely acceptable. It's far from ideal, but can be worked on. Both are TN screens with poor visibility angle and colors.
But what is an extreme advantage is with LVDS to eDP converter one can easily retrofit a FHD 1920x1080 IPS screen. Which is kind of nice!

Sorry! My bad, I made a correction not to confuse others...

I thought T410 comes with 16:10 displays or is ThinkWiki wrong about this? What are the panels available for T410 for the higher resolution one again?Jake.Werecat wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 6:22 pm14" T410/420/430 come in two flavors:

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
You're correct T410 uses 16:10 LCDs, it's the last 14" ThinkPad to have as such. The resolutions are WXGA 1280x800 and WXGA+ 1440x900. There are no higher 16:10 resolution screens available for 14.1". You have to get a 15.4" for the higher res WSXGA+ 1680x1050 or WUXGA 1920x1200 16:10 resolutions.
On a separate but related note the T410's LCD connector on the motherboard is the same as T420 and T430, and vice versa. I've run a T410 1280x800 LCD connected to a T420 motherboard. Apparently LCD connectors are the same on the LCD side of things as well. I've seen bizarre pictures on the subreddit of people connecting 15.6" LCDs to T410 and T430 units.
I suspect the FHD mods for T420 and T430 may also work on T410, note however that the 16:9 form factor LCDs don't fit or interface correctly in a T410 lid. And I unfortunately don't have a T410 anymore to test.
Note that the T410s (slim model), despite sharing a board-side LCD cable connector form factor with T410,T420,T430, has a unique pinout and is NOT compatible with all other LVDS screens and their cables.

Oh, maaaaaan....I just discovered the W series. Never knew about them. So when my T410s dies a RAM death I can switch to an even bigger, better, heavier model that'll gobble up 32G!

That is absolutely right. I'd say W530 which is last of classical design ThinkPad still can be made a spec beast. With 55W TDP Quad Core, 3 HDD/SSD's and as you mentioned 32GB od DDR3 RAM due to 4 sockets

Well, seeing as how the OP just discovered the W series last month, we can cut him a little slack. I'm going to check out the link myself, WRT this T530 that I just got. The keyboard is definitely not as good as the Tx20 and earlier.

I don't read the other forums here much, no. But I did know that the switch was possible on the T4x's, and I assumed it was probably possible on the Wx's. However when I read about it at some point in the past it sounded like far from an ideal solution for me. I don't recall the specifics it just didn't sound appealing. Especially since I also hate the screen on my 430 (also switchable, I know...)RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Fri Apr 03, 2020 1:22 amDon't you read other Forum posts?

Re: when will my 410 be obsolete and useless?
I'm still using T61 and T61p systems. The T500s I bought have been nothing but trouble, so the T61s just keep going. The main ones are at 8GB with 500GB drives and in Advanced docks for an extra 1 - 2 TB HDD capacity and still have the DVD multi available. The others are at 4GB, same HDDs. They work well enough for me.
I did get a T530 to test out and to have a w10 system for certain newer programs that won't run in W7.
