It seems the 'sound board', or actually that section of the motherboard
that is meant to produce sounds, is dead.
I have several similar Thinkpads, running Win 7. When I swap the hard drive
for another one the sounds are there, so I don't think it is a matter of drivers.
Is there anything at all I can do to make it come back?
I do quite believe that there is not a separate sound board on these
but rather that it is built right on to the MB. Right?

I'm not quite there yet in my skills but getting close. It seems a necessary skill to learn if you love classic hardware
for now you can probably get away with buying another used X61s board. They're only $20 or so on ebay
