False advertising on eBay

#1 Post by kfzhu1229 » Tue Apr 14, 2020 12:08 pm

I was casually just seeing listings on eBay to see just how much some laptops sell for, and then I came across this thing:
https://www.ebay.ca/itm/15-Laptop-Noteb ... %7Ciid%3A1
This thing looks normal to anyone who's not an user to one of these things, but the bezels in this thing caught my eye. I have a Latitude C840 with 15" UXGA Dell Ultrasharp like he is advertising, BUT if you see my picture here, my bezels are much, much thinner than that (See how big the Dell logo is there on that bezel compared to mine).
https://1drv.ms/u/s!At7-rt1KJ7WviPd8OEO ... A?e=ww8eoV
Doing more research, it seems like this guy took the lid of a low spec C800 with 14.1" XGA screen and put it in here (you can't even spec a C840 with XGA resolution let alone 14.1"), put a SCREENSHOT of Windows XP in UXGA resolution, and plans to sell it at 200 euros! Notice how he doesn't expand the monitor tab of the device manager nor does he put the BIOS screen up as that would reveal for sure.
While at it, this isn't even a C840 as it doesn't even have a Pentium 4 processor, it is a C810.
Since there is no 14.1" UXGA screens that would work with any laptops of this era (let alone that the C840 actually peeks into your EDID to see the resolution), so either the pictures are all horribly wrong, or this is a fraud! This is the first time I have seen such a practise on these kind of old laptops.

Don't know where you got your negative comments from, but C840 does have a 15" UXGA screen.
Google for: Dell Latitude C840 specs and weep...
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

You didnt get my point. I said you CANNOT order a C840 with ANY XGA screen so his is clearly from a C800 or C810. The BASE model for C840 is SXGA+ according to Dell's Ad pdf from 2002.
He is actually selling a base spec C810 with the slowest 866Mhz Pentium III 256MB RAM and 14.1" XGA screen while he advertises C840 with 1.6Ghz Pentium 4 15" UXGA
And unlike A3x, These 14.1" versions have a lid with a screw mount at different locations so you have to replace the entire lid to get 15"
Imagine one went all out and spent €200 only to get a 14.1" XGA screen in the end...

Looks like I didn't do all my homework here (I'm totally unfamiliar with Dell).
On further inspection, the pictures must belong to another model, as it clearly is shown twice that it has a Pentium III 866Mhz CPU.
Probably more wrong info/pictures in that posting as well.

Either way, your complaint is not related to, and does not belong in the Marketforum, so I moved it.

Ah fair enough makes sense. It is more of a false advertising than someone already got scammed.
Well just wanted to warn everybody about potential scams (whether it is just the seller mismatching the specs or on purpose). Nobody wants to spend that much money only to end up with a crappy 14.1" 1024x768 display while all C840 comes with minimum 15" SXGA+. The screenshots look like as if they are from a high resolution screen and I think Dell did a good job distributing the bezels from a smaller screen so it seems pretty convincing.
