T450s - web surfing and high chassis temperature

#1 Post by gianry » Tue Apr 28, 2020 7:16 am

Is it possible only with web surfing the T450s chassis is very hot ?
there is a continuos cpu fan throttling ( low speed to high speed every 5 min )

Yes, it's possible. What browser and OS are you using?

I have found that Google Chrome likes to start up several instances of something called "SoftwareReporterTool" which hogs up 100% of one or more CPU cores.

Depending on website content it can also be very CPU hungry.

I would load up task manager (or your OS's equivalent) to see what CPU utilization looks like, and what applications are contributing to help pinpoint the cause.

thanks for your help.
I've tried to understand the cpu usage by apps. The most of the percentage is Chrome or Microsoft Edge apps.

In any case I've just finished to clean the cpu fan and to add thermal grease on the cpu as the laptop is 4 years old.

Always a good thing to do every so often!

Chances are your T450s has a dual core, HT CPU with 4 threads. If that is indeed the case, any application that is using close to 25% CPU (or more, if it was developed with SMP capabilities) will certainly cause the machine to heat up. Otherwise just look at the number of cores/threads and that will determine how much CPU activity will be your threshold for maxing out one core. That's all it takes to heat things up quick - as that's also when the CPU runs at the highest turbo frequency and correspondingly is the least efficient.

I've checked well what you wrote.
With only Chrome app loaded the cpu goes from 800 mhz to 3 ghz with no apparent reason.

now after changed the thermal paste the maximun cpu temperature is 75° celsius (previously was 85°)

magically now the laptop is working well ; low cpu speed (800-1200 mhz) with web surfing and so low cpus temperature.(45°)
The cpu fan is always at very low speed .I dont hear it
windows 10 is another marvellous creation of Microsoft ..
