x230 camera better than x220?

#1 Post by dlbeaty » Wed May 06, 2020 9:55 am

My X220 does most everything I need it to do, and I like the options in my current model. Lately we have been doing a lot of Zoom meetings, and the camera does not work too well in interior lighting. If there is not a convenient way to upgrade I will live with this, but I also would like the better screen option, as I mine is not great for videos.

If I did upgrade, would the 230 offer any advantages for Zoom meetings? I have not tried hosting yet, but I am planning to eventually. I have the i7 2640M, 2.8Ghtz, 8 gig ram. I am hoping I can swap the SD drive directly, as I have a lot of time setting up the virtual PC for legacy documents.

Any suggestions?

Best you can do is try messing with the camera's settings (saturation, contrast, brightness etc.), you should be able to within software, AFAIK X230's is the same as X220's. ThinkPad webcams have always been mediocre, apparently; I've never had problems with them. An external camera would work better.

Thanks the information about the cameras. I could not find any way to change the settings on the camera. In Zoom it allows for higher resolution, which helped some. But available light is poor with this camera. Is there a better driver or app that I need to improve the quality?

Is there a chance that the x260 will have a better camera? I realize that I might have to reinstall everything with it, but I might need to upgrade eventually anyhow.

Are you just being backlit by a window or something? Even my outboard Logitech C270 webcam has issues with that, and the only fix is to close the blinds and turn up the room lighting. An additional room lamp might be a cheaper and more effective alternative.
2@ X120e's for fun, T430s/X220i/T420 running Win10.

If you go for an external webcam, look for a Logitech Webcam Pro 9000.
One of the best, if you ask me.

Yes, I always make sure the light is coming from the front, and I so move lights around. Definitely cheaper. Last night I tried higher resolution in Zoom. It is a wider view, but it did seem to give a more natural image. What gets me is when others use their smart phone cameras they look so much better even in bad light.

Thanks. I could not find a new one. Current models do not offer the Zeiss lens that I can tell. The C920 is supposed to have a sharp glass lens. It looks like the company is out of stock and online sellers are jacking up the prices due to the higher demand now. From $80 to $180!

I dunno what OS you're running but for me with Win 7 I have "Communications Utility" installed and I can do this. https://i.imgur.com/iBBXqrg.png

Thanks for the information. I have been updating my x220 from the Lenovo site. I saw this but thought it had to do with internet connections. I just saw that the latest version supports the x230, but not the x220. When I ran system update, it was there, so I will try it.
