WTS: A bunch of old ThinkPad keyboards FREE
I have a bunch of old ThinkPad keyboards which I want to give away to somebody who will actually put them to use. Tomorrow I will be adding the FRU numbers and photos but I think they're mostly from the late 90s and they all look alike. I can't guarantee that all of them work.
My only condition is that whoever decides to get them, will have to pay shipping.
Cheers

Are these the old-style click-keys, not the newer chicklet-style? I could use one and would spring for shipping just to have extra key caps as spares for like an X220i.Half-Saint wrote: ↑Mon May 04, 2020 3:37 pmI have a bunch of old ThinkPad keyboards which I want to give away to somebody who will actually put them to use.

Finally found the time to take a couple of photos. As you can see, one is from a T21 and the other from T4x. They should be compatible with several models as I guess most of you know.
T21 keyboard should be in working order. Not sure about the other one but I suspect it's fine as well.
The other three boards are older and most probably have issues.

Where can I upload photos? My regular image hosting service won't accept them for some reason - claims invalid format despite them being .jpg. And the forum doesn't allow attachments.

Thanks, the pic helps obviously. None have the key that I need though.

Quite nice of you to do so. Kudos.
I might have to do some checking on which TPs I have and which match any of these - and if I have any dead then get the PARTS out on the forum for people.

Hi I just got a t440 with a keyboard that doesn't work.
will the keyboard in the upperhand corner work as a replacement? sounds like i might have to grind down the tabs and install EC mod, but that's doable.
if it work, I can paypal you the shipping.

Hiya, to me these all look like classic keyboard ("scissor" are the called?) not chiclet keboards (like Macbook or Thinkpads from *30 generation onwards).
If you meant top-right keyboard it seems to be FRU 02K5555 fitting T20, T21, T22, T23.
All these keyboards I understand are really old and are of interest for Thinkpad collectors mainly.
I myself got a bunch of T60/R60/T61 machines but these keyboards are for even older generations.

ok no problem. i got a classic one for my t440 off ebay.
my current issue is that my 2 key puts out 2 and f12 and my f12 put outs 2 and f12 too. also the windows key doesn't register.
this is a hardware issue since it happens on both linux and windows.
i'm hoping it's a problem with the circuit board on he keyboard - not the main motherboard itself.
i'm holding back on getting a screen upgrade until this issue is resolve.
do you think it's a pretty good slam dunk once i replace the keyboard it'll work fine ?

Re: WTS: A bunch of old ThinkPad keyboards FREE
I just posted about keyboards for my 2 x220's and a modified x230 with a 220 keyboard (i like to have 2 spare for colleagues who don't bring one then need one at work sessions i run).
I've bought 4 replacement keyboards now and they have all been total garbage replicas. I assume i'm late to the party, but if not i'd very gratefully take 1, or 3 and pay for postage.
Also, that's a really nice thing you're doing/have done.

Hi, sorry to hear about your trouble.RoamingAndy wrote: ↑Wed Oct 14, 2020 11:19 amx220 ... bought 4 replacement keyboards ... all ... total garbage replicas
You experience is very interesting though.. Perhaps you could launch a new topic, smth like "Fake X220 keyboards"? Questions I have are
- which FRU they had on them
- how genuine/non genuine they looked on the internet
- what you saw when you received them
- how you knew they were replicas
- same/different sellers
- one purchase/multiple purchases?
- ebay? AliExpress?
- how much they cost
- if they were sold as new or used
- any tips you may have for avoiding bad purchases like this..
It wouldn't be without interest to see some photos too!

Re: WTS: A bunch of old ThinkPad keyboards FREE
I think its all of them in Europe right now. I cant find any refurbished ones, almost all are being posted from China and they are normally listed with the correct FRU's.
- The shine on the keyboard is more dull than the normal x220 one
- If you look closely you can see the keys don't fit so tight with each other, especially on the corners
- The typing experience on all of them has been horrible. Like slapping a long dead haddock against a large rock. Horrible sound. No cushioning. just dull wet thud after dull wet thud. Rattly too while typing.
- Poor lifespan. I bought four and only one is working now.
- Normal price.. which is far more than they were 12 months ago. £40 i paid for this typing experience which is less fun than licking the corpse of a long dead pigeon.
Given that the keyboard is one of the major perks of the x220 its a real bummer that i can't find decent replacements. A better thread would be for users to share anywhere they bought a good keyboard as i think they are all replicas now.
Oh, and one randomly turns my laptop on at any given time day or night.. Of course this is the one still working. I have to remove the battery now.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences. So I take itRoamingAndy wrote: ↑Fri Oct 16, 2020 12:56 pmI think its all of them in Europe right now ... all are being posted from China and they are normally listed with the correct FRU's
- you were probably shopping on ebay.co.uk?
- different sellers?
- about £40 a piece?
- which FRU did they mask as - NMB, Chicony, Alps?
I've got from AliExpress stashed right now but I'm sure how soon I get around to testing it.. Was meant to be NMB
