T61 14" wide-screen not powering up with X9000

#1 Post by Natakranta » Fri May 08, 2020 5:57 pm

Hi guys,
I took a gamble and bought X9000 on eBay from China. It arrived yesterday and today I tested it in my T61 14" wide screen.
Unfortunately laptop is not powering up with it. On test run I put the heat sink on with thermal paste, plug keyboard and palmrest, plug power cable, power and battery LEDs start shining, press power button on keyboard and nothing happens. Screen is off, fan is off, no bips, nothing, zero, nada, null.
So I do quiet Arghhhhh, and put back T7100 in. Laptop is working as normal. All good.
This is NVS140M board with Middleton BIOS. It was successfully running with T7100 (originally), with T9300 (after Middleton) and now with different T7100 (as I put that T9300 to my R601 Franky).
So laptop is proven to work with various Merom and Penryn CPUs, yet remains cold dead with this X9000.
Did I get a fake or broken CPU?
Or am I doing something wrong?
Should I bother and test it in my R601 Franky to double confirm?

If it is like the charging light also go off after you press the power button, then most likely the CPU isn't even detected by the SuperIO chip. First check to see if you have any bent pins or something.

Yeah I think you might wanna do that. This is a pretty expensive chip and you do wanna make sure you know where the fault is.
Did you check if the Middleton's BIOS is actually flashed properly? Don't think that can be the issue though as an old BIOS will at least start up the laptop but with possibly no screen.
Also, a warning that a 0732 datecode on your NVS140M chip is categorised as "unsafe" and may fail due to lead-free solder fill issues. You might not wanna use that as a daily driver as the abuse of a daily driver can make the solder go wrong.
The "safe" revision has a datecode of 0831 or later and/or has a code of G86-741-A2 instead of 740 (The 741 is built on a smaller process as well I believe I read that somewhere from a Chinese source)

Hi,
I checked the pins after I unpacked the CPU, they looked perfect every way.
If I recall correctly, after plugging in power cable, power led was lighted and battery led was blinking. Pressing power button had no effect on lighting or blinking of them.

I'm sure Middleton BIOS is flashed correctly in my T61 14" wide because I noticed significant increase in SSD performance after flashing Middleton clearly indicating upgrade from SATA1 to SATA2.
Moreover I think it is Merom board which wouldn't be able to take Penryn CPU like T9300 without Middleton.

Anyway, I'll put this X9000 to my R601 Franky to double check.

Yes, I know my T61 Nvidia chip is in the risk group :)
I'm not much worried, I hardly use this laptop, basically I powering up every few weeks to let Linux Mint do its updates.
Before I got it last summer it spent 6 years in a drawer unused after my father in-law passed away. Before that it was his office work computer.

Oh really? I thought it is only the X9000 that requires the middleton BIOS. Guess I don't know the full details of the T6x systems as I own the Dell equivalent of Dell Latitude D630, D830, Precision M4300 and those systems accept my X9000 and full SATA2 on the latest A17 BIOS.

That's good. You might wanna put a beefier T500 heatsink as the extra heat from the X9000 might put more strain on your GPU temps, but please make sure the X9000 is working in the first place! Good luck!

No worries about T61, the X9000 is meant for T60 Frankenpad I'll be building as soon as I receive the T61 motherboard I'm waiting for.
It just happened the CPU came first and reading people often receive faulty not counterfeit CPUs from eBay, I wanted to check it out. My T61 was was natural candidate to test it as it has NVS140M motherboard as the one I bought for T60 Frankenpad project.
My T61 destination CPU is going to be T8300 as I've been advised it runs cool and is just slightly less powerful than T9300.

I'll try to test this X9000 in my R601 Frank tonight, but I'm not expecting a miracle :(

Test 2
I put this X9000 into my R601 Frank and same as with T61. I plug power cable, power led starts shining green, battery led blinks once amber. I press power button, battery led starts blinking, power led remains green, I hear DVD drive waking with short 1 sec noise and it gets silent. Screen remains off. Dead black. Nothing happens.

I put T9300 back in, power it up, and laptop works as normal.

Can I proclaim this X9000 faulty?
I'm so annoyed, such a waste of time waiting for it.
What the seller was thinking, that buyer will not realise CPU is not working?

So you say the power LED is on? I thought you said no difference with any of the LEDs.
Okay bad news for you: This post is with your CPU part number and it is known to be a fake:
viewtopic.php?t=127430
And here, I have posted pictures of the two X9000 that I bought off Taobao (There is a huge difference between buying from eBay China and Taobao, both from china but it is rather unlikely you will get scammed on Taobao if you know what you look for, because the policies on Taobao are far, far more rigorous and the delivery time within china is maximum one week), and both have a model number of FF80576X9000, yours has a model number of AW80576X9000.
Upon further inspection, it seems like AW is the 1066Mhz Penryn models.
If you can get around with getting the money back without returning the CPU, perhaps you can try the 1066Mhz mod and see if it works then (or even better try on a T/R400/500 if you have one). It is very possible you have a X9100 faked into a X9000 hoping that you have a 1066Mhz capable motherboard and it would fire up perfectly fine. Since the X9100 is NOT the fastest CPU you can put on the laptops supporting that CPU, it is much, much cheaper than the X9000.
https://1drv.ms/u/s!At7-rt1KJ7WviPhMr00 ... A?e=KaSoNq
Also it would be helpful if you can include the original ebay listing you bought it from, if it still exists.
Also found this fake listing from other forums: https://www.ebay.com/p/74072195?iid=332356430369
Notice how the model number is like mine but also notice how the model number isn't centred and look photoshopped.

Thank you for your comments, very helpful, much appreciated!

eBay listing I purchased from
It is pictures as FF80576 and not AW I received. Moreover item description details it as FSB 800Mhz chip.
So I didn't receive what was advertised.

Oh man, the eBay scammers strike again. I know exactly how you feel, I was the poster for that "Did I buy a fake X9000?" thread. Also I have had 3 fake/ faulty Intel T9900 processors out of 4 purchases!!! That's a 25% success rate. So I have completely given up on buying processors from China, it's just not worth my time. Eventually I got refunds, but 2 times I had to actually turn to eBay itself, as the sellers stopped responding. And I was also out of the postage price I had to spend on posting it back to China (£10), as once you get a refund there is no way to contact eBay any more for that given purchase, as their system marks it as case closed. I am pretty sure if I chose economy postage for the return (where there is no tracking, and they don't have to sign it upon delivery) the seller straight up would have denied that he received the cpu back. So even if you are technically eligible for a refund for the postage too IF the item you purchased was faulty, in reality if the seller doesn't want to refund it, you will be out of that money. All you can do is give negative feedback at that point if you are still within that time bracket.

So I would advise anyone thinking about buying CPUs from China through eBay: don't waste your time and money, especially on processors that are the fastest in a given generation, they like to fake those like crazy.

Well yeah try open a case on eBay with that thing. If eBay doesn't believe you for the fraudulent purchase, there is always the credit card chargeback.
Also when you buy anything from eBay from China, go to the seller's profiles and have a look at the neutral and negative feedbacks and see if they mention anything about scams (and in your case there are).
I really didn't know about the CPU scams on eBay because the CPUs I bought on eBay are not nearly as expensive (I bought faster Pentium III-M 1.2's, top dog Pentium M 780's and Xeon X3363's and they all worked perfectly fine as there are plenty of supplies for those I think), and the real expensive CPUs I bought are from Taobao and they all worked fine too. Gah I should've brought some spare X9000's with me when I bought mine in Taobao twice, because on Taobao you can only scam ppl for the non-obvious things as each Taobao seller has their Gov ID's linked to their accounts and there is no escape from that once the buyer reports them.
Also, put your compromised experience with this purchase here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=27046&p=844307#p844307

For now I wrote to the seller reporting item not as described / faulty asking for full refund.
Waiting 2 days for reply and if no contact I'll start case with eBay.
I'll be posting updates here.

No reply from seller despite whole working day has passed. I think I need to give him two days for reply.

Meanwhile this X9000 looks legit to me.
Seller has one X9000 in sold items with positive feedback. And pictures seem to show real item and not a generic picture like in other listings. Price is significantly higher as well than most of X9000 on eBay.

What do you think?

I think at this point if you don't get anything from that forum member, you can just attempt the pinmod to get a X9100 to run in a X9000. I believe the X9100's are less sought after thus no fakes.
Also you can try the pinmod on that fake X9000 to see if it would work then.
I have just read about this pinmod, it looks like this and will forcibly downclock any 1066Mhz FSB CPU to 800Mhz. And then since the stock voltages are designed for 3.06Ghz clocks anyway, you don't need much overvolting to get it back to 3.06 with Throttlestop.

My message from 10th May:
Hi, the X9000 CPU I received is not working. I tested it in two laptops capable of FSB 800Mhz chip as in CPU description and none of them powered up with your X9000 CPU while they both work perfectly fine with other CPUs I have.
Moreover the CPU I received is not what was advertised. Your item listing presents CPU with description FF80576X9000 while on the one I received it is written AW80576X9000 see picture from testing I performed attached.
From what I found out so far "AW" is typical description for FSB 1000Mhz chip X9100, which makes me think the CPU I received is a X9100 with counterfeit descriptions on it. That's why it is not working in my FSB 800Mhz laptops.
Or it may be just defective, broken CPU. Either way it is not working and is not as described.

Please issue full refund.

Kind regards,
Today, 13th May, I got reply form seller:
Hi,dear riend.
Sorry to hear that.
But the item has been tested and worked well before shipping.
Could you send us your computer link. and tell us your old cpu modle. then we will help you check if this is fit for your computer.
Please don't worry,if you can't used it, then we will help you return it. Ok?
Look forward to your reply.
Thanks and best regards.

Well what you can say is that you later got another X9000 from a different source and that worked fine.
And if you wanna be aggressive, you can tell him to refund you full or you will open a case on ebay saying it is a false advertised counterfeit product and that the model number doesn't exist nor does it match with the image.
Or you can try and put it in a T500 or T400 and see if it really is a 1066Mhz CPU faked into a X9000

I don't have any T500 or T400 at hand to check if it works with 1000Mhz FSB board. And I'm not spending 90 EUR on a T400 just to test this chip that was advertised as a 800Mhz FSB and should be if is genuine :D

Meanwhile seller is ping-ponging messages. He claims CPU was tested before dispatch and working. Sure.
He asked me to check return postage cost. So I did. And surprise, Irish Post is not taking packages to China. The lady at my local post office has just told me they have list of countries they can take a package to deliver but China is not on the list. She advised me that I can still send it with DHL courier for 49 EUR
So I asked seller if he is willing to pay 49 EUR upfront for return postage as the listing clearly says: "Free shipping and returns - 30 days / Money back or replacement (buyer's choice) / Seller pays for return shipping"
And I insisted for full refund for item not as described and faulty to be sent to my PayPal now.
Waiting for reply.

Update.
After long exchange of emails seller processed full refund today.
Of course he is not willing to pay 49 EUR for DHL courier return postage.
We agreed than when Irish Post lifts ban on sending to China I will check for cheaper option, than he will decide if wants to pay for return postage. I call it fair deal, apart of lot of hustle I had to go through, which I really shouldn't, nerves and lost time.

Meanwhile I bought yesterday another X9000 form different seller with history of positive feedback for X9000 sold previously, and who replied my message confirming he has and will be sending FF80576X9000. Unfortunately this increased level of hope for genuine CPU came at significantly higher price.eBay listing.
Two days ago it was $79, yesterday I paid $89, today I see the price is $99. I see he is testing the limit.
Well, nobody said this hobby makes any sense money wise

Ah that is nice to hear that you got your money back at least. Hope this one prove to pay off.
Well I got mine on Taobao for around ¥200-250 depending on the time of year. That is still more than the scam prices you fell into on eBay. If you live in a place with a lot of Chinese ppl around, then Taobao most likely can deliver at an extra cost of $10-20, but unfortunately I don't think Dublin makes the cut for that.

If this helps, I bought the two X9000's from these listings and these sellers (and obviously they turned out to be real):
https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1 ... b2pvsved7f
https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a1 ... b2pvsvfd56
The second seller is actually really good, though you might find the prices to be higher on there.

Thank you for the links, hopefully I will soon be able to add another good seller to the list :)

Re that line of characters at the top, is my understanding correct that
- for two equally legitimate samples
- the tail ("SLB5J") can be the same
- but the head ("V934A927") can be different
?

That's X9300, a 1066Mhz FSB CPU, are you going to do the FSB mod?

Meanwhile I am waiting for my 2nd X9000, as per tracking it is "Departed from facility SHENZHEN". Fingers crossed

8) 8) 8) My goal is to beat the cpu score of a pretty average T520 which I'm using now, just for the sport of it!

What I did when I shopped for X9000 was I sorted the results on Taobao via their ratings. The thing is that on Taobao, there are three ratings: Item description accuracy (And whether scams and such are present), seller's service quality, and delivery speed. They are represented in decimals (0.0-5.0) but the second decimal digit is equally as important yet Taobao doesn't show that to you, but it does tell you whether it is above standard, on par, or below standard in each of those categories. They are in Chinese but orange/red is above standard, grey is on par, green means below standard. You WILL want a seller with the first two categories to be on par or above standard to avoid any possibility of sketchiness. There is an additional rating labelled as hearts, diamonds or crowns. This one is the one representing how trustworthy the seller is.
What I do is I only buy from sellers with the categories all as on par or above standard (grey or red/orange), and the trustworthy rating must be minimum 5 diamonds (and preferably 1 or more crowns). Avoid by all means if it is just hearts. And only then select the cheapest one at the time of when you are buying it.
And if you can, go to the feedback section of the product page and google translate the neutral and negative feedbacks to see whether they are real concerns or just b*tchy buyers. Also have a look at the feedbacks with pictures as those tend to be more detailed
There is also the 2nd hand market of Taobao called Xianyu, which literally translates to leftover things. That can be useful if you need to replace misc. parts of a laptop or get a charger or something (do NOT buy chargers directly on Taobao, those are most likely replicas). Many ppl have broken laptops that they are parting it out and you chat with them to tell them what parts you want. I used that to purchase a lid assembly and hinges for a Latitude D600 and a base cover for C840 and both worked flawlessly. But to fully make use of it, you MUST use the mobile app which unfortunately is completely in Chinese and since it is not a webpage you can't just paste those things onto google translate.

Thank you for lots of useful info, fellow ThinkPad lover! :)

Does Xianyu have their own website? Would you have a link please?
Does Xianyu have their own separate Android app similar to Taobao?
Or is Xianyu completely embedded within the main Taobao website and app?

Xianyu is embedded as a part of Taobao's website but that only allows you to have a look at the items, and not to chat with the seller or to buy it, and many times they don't show up on your search on Taobao.
The website is 2.taobao.com (2 is for 2nd hand)
But as soon as you type that in you will see on the announcements it says that the web version is no longer being updated and asks you to download the app.
If the QR code doesn't work, the android version can be found here:
https://mobile.baidu.com/item?docid=252 ... m=1010680m
You can use your Taobao account to log in, but I have no idea how are you gonna complete the identification process without a Chinese ID.
The postage are slightly more expensive up there than on Taobao though. But occasionally you might come across some jackpots like I had seen a ThinkPad A31p selling at the price of like £20
And if ThinkPad parts are what you are after, the Chinese ThinkPad forum 51nb might have good stuff there as well.
If max CPU or RAM are what you are after for, Xianyu probably doesn't have it as not many would be reselling one of those that they previously bought

I had last exam today, I'm free man again, at least till results in July when it appears if I passed or have to learn again to repeat in August. It means I had a bit of time tonight to play with ThinkPads. A week or two ago came the 2nd X9000 I ordered after the failure the first one was, whole story in posts above.
There it is inside my trusty R601Frank guinea pig and...
Tadam! booted to BIOS, X9000 recognised 8)
Short while later Mint booted. Idle desktop temp on the screen.

Now X9000 is out, waiting to be placed in my T601 Frank when it is ready.
T9300 is back in my R601 Frank, and it goes on sale. I'll soon advertise in appropriate section.
I'm selling R601 to cover for cash I spent on collecting parts for T601 project.
