Re: Wanted: T42 Replacement Keyboard
What are you having trouble with your current keyboard? Missing keys or broken board?
Is FRU 39T0704 exactly what you have currently?
I might have some parted out T4x keyboards that might help you

Re: Wanted: T42 Replacement Keyboard
The original KB seems to be breaking down. Function Key has come off, and won't stay on. Function and Control seem "shaky". Control is typing an accented "a" and does not work...
I tried order two keyboards. They didn't fit. The stud locations are important. There are only three studs on the back, and only one under the touchpad area.
Yes, the numbers in the original post are from the original keyboard. (Part No: 39T0674 FRU No: 39T0704)
Initially, I planned to repair the Function Key, but given that it seems to be getting worse, I decided to look for a replacement keyboard.

Re: Wanted: T42 Replacement Keyboard
The keyboards are different between the 14" and 15" models on T4x/R5x.
Given the keyboard FRU, it seems like your T42 is a 15" but could you please verify the 7-character model number on the bottom of the machine? It should look something along the lines of 2373-A1B...

Re: Wanted: T42 Replacement Keyboard
From my knowledge, that is a 15" one with Alps switches.
Your keyboards that you've tried and does not work most likely are from 14.1" families. But if you happen to have an 14.1" ALPS one you can still swap around the keycaps and switches. Check the FRU number of the back of your keyboards that you've ordered wrong against the hardware maintenance manual from all of T4x and R5x models from the HMM archive above.
Your problem with the fn key is most likely the keycap or key switch having broken tabs. This kind of stuff happens when plastics get old (though this is still a country mile better than some other home computer key switches) or you didn't put it on properly.
You can replace the keyboard with anything from the 15" family of T4x or R5x series but if the switches aren't ALPS they will feel different.
Do note that there are several FRU's spanning from T42, T43 and R5x series that are all the same ALPS version. 93P4840 is also ALPS, US layout, from other T42 models and also R5x models.
I find it kinda ridiculous that they have to use different screw posts for the 14.1" and 15" versions. That isn't a problem in the newer T510/520/410/420/W510/520 series keyboards or the Dell D series keyboards from the time (Though the Dx00, Dx10, Dx20/Dx30 all have different keyboards)
Unfortunately I don't have a spare 15" keyboard around.

Re: Wanted: T42 Replacement Keyboard (Photos!)
The Machine is a 2378-REU dated 05/09.
And yes, it's T42, 15"
Right Control key works fine. Left Control does not respond. Key feels completely normal, but I haven't pulled the cap yet.
I've put photos on my Google Drive:

Re: Wanted: T42 Replacement Keyboard
So you need a keyboard with 3 posts as opposed to ones with 4 posts used on 14" models. You may want to put that bit of info in your thread title.
Happy hunting.

Re: Wanted: T42 Replacement Keyboard
Yes - three posts - the reason I say the post location is critical is that there are more than one kb with three posts for the 15" machines. And the FRU lists often erroneously list them as interchangeable.
Apparently, this T42 Model JN-US is not the common one...

Re: Wanted: T42 Replacement Keyboard
The different screw posts on these models was to allow for the cardslot option, which didn't leave enough space fro the left post.kfzhu1229 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 05, 2020 1:21 pmYour problem with the fn key is most likely the keycap or key switch having broken tabs. I need to keep this machine going, as it's a workhorse, and I have a number of Ultrabay accessories that I can't use in the newer T570.
I've confirmed the right Control key works. And the Function Key's centre post also seems to work - just no key. But the Left Control Key just types whatever second character you type (so no Control). I will remove the cap, and see if I can find any more info re: repairing.
Meanwhile, I suppose a matching ALPS Function Key assembly would get things rolling... I had considered this earlier, but found the online info re: key types completely baffling...
There are pictures of the Key base on the google link.

Re: Wanted: T42 Replacement Keyboard
Okay, on checking the HMM, i get completely different part numbers. I'm not familiar with these.kfzhu1229 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 05, 2020 1:21 pmFrom my knowledge, that is a 15" one with Alps switches.

It lists the Alps KB as 93P4840. The NMB is 93P4780, and the Chicony is 13N9893. All for the 15" models...

Thanks, junom!
Just landed a refurbed 39T0704 like yours. I'll let you know if it doesn't work out - I may still need one. These are scarce...

Re: Wanted: T42 15" Replacement Keyboard 39T0674 (THREE mounting Posts)
Depending on your luck, a "refurbed" keyboard can be one of those with aftermarket made switches and keycaps and can feel really weird in the hands and have sensitivity issues if you are unlucky. Fortunately in that case you can still get around it by transferring across the keycaps of your known genuine keyboard.
