Forgot to mention that a package from JP with three Roland synthesizer modules was held up in Osaka for months before it finally got to NYC. It then sat in NYC for a week plus also.

Plus no further 401K employer match remainder of 2020. Could be a lot worse of course.

This Karl Denninger guy is interesting. He challenges many of the commonly accepted theories about COVID-19.

His most significant claim is that fecal-oral is a significant transmission vector, which is currently ignored. From what I see, there is no agreed conclusion on that in the scientific community so far. Most studies say "unlikely, but not impossible", a minority says "likely". I think we will need to wait longer to be certain.

I believe he's wrong on "95% people on ventilators die, therefore ventilators are harmful and not helpful". I think most recent data suggests that >50% of people on ventilators survive, if you put them on them early enough. If you miss the "window of opportunity" (which is 1-2 days), the prognosis becomes significantly worse.

In light of the above (if it's true), then slowing down the infection rate (flattening the curve) will also help reduce COVID-19 deaths, not just deaths from other factors - becomes a non-overwhelmed medical system will be able to treat COVID-19 patients better. This is contrary to what Karl believes, but I think he is wrong on that. In fact, I think he is wrong on that in general, regardless of what's true about ventilators. If the infection rate skyrockets, so does the number of people who need ICU, and the system will collapse, no matter what the proper treatment is.

Finally, not sure I agree about "sanitizers being worthless". I think it depends on which ones. I believe 70% alcohol is said to be very effective against such viruses, but 40% or 95% alcohol is far less effective, and anti-bacterial "septal scrubs" (Chlorhexidine-Gluconate) are ineffective. In regards to "whoever touches the sanitizer dispenser contaminates it" - well, it is equally true about soap dispensers. But if you touch it and then wash your hands, and don't touch it again - you are probably OK. Plus, there are non-contact dispensers.

As soon as someone present their opinion and only their opinion as "facts", that's when I tune out. In this day and age it's all about presenting the most attention grabbing headlines, truth be darn. The more sensational the better.

Living in Turkey and been working actively in my shop except for a few days cause of the curfew. It is an essential job that i sell and trade mobile phones, tablets, laptops etc. Thankfully none of my loved ones had been diagnosed positive including myself. We take caution of interacting with people and objects, wearing masks. if covid is to be spread, it is going to spread. Life goes on. Cant live with the fear of death but embrace the idea that one day, what is going to happen is bound to happen anyway.

I'm not doing anything.I'm not even wearing the free masks you get at work because I work in my own office so what am I going to get infected from my own computer screen. I have a pile of masks in my desk as its mandatory to take a mask every day, but its not mandatory to wear it. I also work in a quasi chemical biolab area so we enforce hairnets, face shields, beardnets and mandatory handwash, alcohol santisers etc. but I ignore some of this since I'm often only handling a mouse kbd touchpen touchscreens etc.

I dont take public transport... havent been on a bus or train this year. I try to avoid large groups... eg. I noped out of a shopping center that looked like there were too many people on a Saturday afternoon.

I'm fortunate to live in a state that has so far managed this thing down.... 3,500 infections, 3,000 recoveries, 50 deaths for 7.5 mil. people TO DATE.... and this government isnt even that competant... they just let the state health dept. handle everything.... in fact this whole country is a run by a bag of incompetant idiots but they passed the parcel down the chain... the federals wanted to keep things open but every state revolted and did their own thing as far as their medical boards taking over and forced state cordons etc.

So we shouldnt have a 2nd flair up but hey, it happened down south.

I look at bemusment at the alleged "developed/developing countries" like Sweden who havent been able to handle this thing.... take your hydroxychloroquine whatever that's good for...

Its blue lives matter when they're on your side but 'stormtroopers' when they do their job that people dont agree with.

Funny relationship people have with their police.

Ever see their uniforms? They look like a catalog page straight out of Hugo Boss' 1939 edition.

You do know what Hugo Boss made in the 1930s, right?

Had to cancel a free trip to AC, NJ this month. My free trip to AC, NJ next month got cancelled day before yesterday. Got a free trip to NO, LA instead. Plus still have a free trip to AC, NJ in September. Probably will also get canceled with the CT/NJ/NY quarantine.

Have had cold symptoms all week so far. Maybe got the virus. It is so rampant here that is almost impossible to avoid unless you quarantine 100%. Wait and see how it goes.

Hugo Boss was the designer of the M32 Allgemeine SS uniform. His company did not actually make very many of this uniform other than initial designs and samples. It was farmed out to other RZM approved clothiers and privat tailors.

The M38 was the replacement for the M32 in pale grey. However, the M32 was still worn on occasion for special ceremonies and sometimes parades. It never went away entirely.

^^
Maybe so, but they (the company) also made Army and Waffen SS uniforms throughout the war:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Boss

The company even made a written apology in 2011.

Hey that's nothing, the US govt brought Werner von Braun and 100 or so of his underlings here and he was the first chief of NASA.

And the govt also brought Shirō Ishii to the US and gave him and some of his madmen immunity as well.

For those who don't know who Ishii was, go look it up. That area is still suffering from what he did.

I dont think you can blame the EU or the WHO or whatever for a particular country's "failures".

Realistically most people outside of a few populaces will take notice of government guidelines so you expect extra governmental bodies to be able to direct what a country is supposed to do?

What happened to sovreignty?

What happened to states rights?

Even in that regard certain people wont even take in what their local county or local government group recommends unless its to "do whatever you like".

I agree. Countries that managed to stop COVID were proactive and didn't wait for any transnational body. Those that dilly-dallied, offhandedly dismissed the severity of the situation (whether due to hubris, stupidity, or just outright incompetence), or even outright lied to their citizens are now the ones with the highest cases.

Look at my messed-up country. Back in May, scientists from our premier state university estimated that by the end of June, we could reach 40,000 total COVID-19 cases.

We reached 37,000 by the end of June, and our presidential spokesperson proudly declared that we "beat" the university's estimates, to the chagrin of pretty much everyone who still had a brain.

By the end of the first week of July, we had over 9000 new cases. *facepalm*
And now, we're over 68,000 total cases, and the same spokesperson is arguing that everyone "only looks at the total COVID cases and not the other data"... like what, the almost 44,000 active cases which is even higher than Indonesia (with 36k active out of 88k total, based on data from worldometers.info)?

For the last couple of months, I've been living in a world with no virus. Except for a handful of quarantined returnees, there has been no sign of the virus in New Zealand for 80 days. Unfortunately, I soon have to return to the U.S. Fortunately, "that woman from Michigan" has been doing quite well.

This isnt the state I live in however the state to the south has police slash army border crossings and patrols to keep people in. Lockdowns are now in force pending fines. Any movement is now restricted to essentials. N95 masks are now mandatory outside again pending large fines for non compliance. And masks are not cheap nor that easily available outside. This is because of a flare up of cases in the hundreds. I dont think that many populations would put up with such governmental interference.

And where I am there's still none of that. I tested this. I have a bunch of masks from work since its free for employees.

I wore one to a large popular home hardware chain like your US Harbor Freight etc. and people looked at me like I was an alien because I was the only one with a mask.

Its fine where I am but drive a mere 300 miles and some people would say that's going to a police state.

This virus is so contagious that it is now impossible to get rid of it IMO. Once you relax any lock down it flares up almost immediately.

We cannot close down the world indefinitely. Not sure there is a solution. Letting it go may be the only option to resuscitate a moribund global economy.

Mortgage, rent, cars, credit cards, student loans and on and on cannot be excused / deferred indefinitely. It is becoming such a vicious economic cycle that it will rapidly become untenable and may destroy civil society.

The problem is, whenever the restrictions get relaxed, some people party like it's the fourth of July or something. YOLO idiots, "my personal 'freedom' overrides personal and social responsibility" brats, anti-vaxxers, anarchist idiots, total whackjobs who think they're immune, there's an entire spectrum.

But younk, even worse are those that use the crisis for financial gain like those who peddle fake cures, substandard protective gear, etc. In my country, there are allegations that the health department's highest official is profiteering by selling (or getting kickbacks for approving the purchase of) overpriced medical supplies and equipment.

In many stories, when a crisis threatens the world's existence, humanity unites and faces the challenge head-on. So far, I've seen none of that. Instead, I've seen the worst in world leaders-- incompetent presidents, manipulating dictators, deluded "I'm never wrong" idiots, weak-willed puppets, etc. Countries are blaming China (with good reason), but many do so only to divert attention from their own crises, and shift the blame rather than be held accountable for their own failures. There's still some competent ones, but they're few and far between.

As we humans expand our knowledge, but fail to gain wisdom or outgrow our immature ways, tragedies are sure to occur, again and again.

This is by no means a US-specific problem.

There is no cure and no solution. IMO we need to reopen 100% with the best possible safeguards (distancing, personal hygiene, self-isolation by especially susceptible / vulnerable people).

But that is not really possible in democracies because the opposition to accepting reality that we are mere mortals is not acceptable to many.

The cure is far worse than the disease and increasingly so IMO.

And there is definitely philosophical / ethical / moral merit to the argument that these unilateral restrictions on people's personal freedom are inappropriate and in many cases unconstitutional IMO.

If anything it shows the inability of many governments to handle pandemics and potentially other calamities. 21st century governance requires a significant rethink IMO. But again this is likely not going to happen due to extreme ideological entrenchment on all sides rather than the prevalence of pragmatism.

There are countries that have succeeded though... however you want to define 'success'.

To me, success is not 15,000 people getting infect per day and 1,500 dying... per day.

If your country villifies and kills medical professionals then you have to punish people who are anti-science.

In some western countries something like 85% of people accept the science and obey government solutions and have essentially eradicated covid.

In my state of 7.5 mil we still have 49 deaths since day one. No deaths for weeks and weeks now. That's closer to a defintion of 'success'.

I do get the need to punish China. But unless you have any workable solutions then there really is no punishment is there?

Being anti science, anti authority and having 'personal freedom' as the most important thing coupled with an ineffective government means that some places will end up with this ongoing still in 2021 with over 250,000 deaths... we hope there's a vaccine and we hope that it comes from some place like India or Germany so they dont lock it down to a few chosen pharmaceutical giants so only the rich can afford it.

But hey... does it matter over here where our death and infection rate are essentially static?

Will things only change if politicans start getting it? I dont think these guys would change their opinion. That Brazilian PM has had it 3 times and he's still stuck in his ways...

Agreed, protect yourself if you are vulnerable, to include retiring if you won't risk getting infected at work. And don't be stupid about things.

Admittedly that is too much to ask of the vast majority of people here in the US.

Had to cancel my NO, LA trip next week and my AC, NJ trip next month was cancelled.

Appear to have recovered mostly from what may have been COVID-19.

Turns out people who had common cold corona viruses in the past have a better defense against COVID-19. I have had plenty of colds over the decades.

Was off for 2.5 months and was bored to tears. Kept myself busying shopping for and keeping the spirits up of a few seniors who choose to self isolate in March, April and May. Now that everything pretty much opened up again as we've flattened the curve, I've been back to work with some sensible precautions in this pandemic. I'm a small general contractor and for the past 2 months have been swamped with work. I'm grateful for the work and will make hay as the sun is shining. Anticipating more restrictions or even another shutdown when the next wave hit. I'm hoping this won't happen but we'll be prepared if it happens. In the meantime been enjoying getting together with family and friends after months of voluntary self isolation. Enjoying life with a cigar and scotch or 3 with friends. Been enjoying a great summer so far after a pretty dismal March-June.
