A31p numpad unit *PICS*

#1 Post by manmanmanman » Fri Jul 31, 2020 9:06 am

Posting some pictures of my A31p that came with a numpad. Sadly the motherboard in the A31p flexed so the machine is no longer functional. However its in fantastic physical condition. Enjoy!

FWIW, the numpad will work in any Thinkpad with Ultrabay Plus (not Ultrabay 2000 which lacks the USB pins).

So pretty much the A2x series, A3x series? Also have an A31 which worked the last time I checked...Doesn't have the same charm as the A31p though

Also T23, T30, R3x, R40 and X3x Ultrabase (not A2x, I was mistaken).

In fact, in all those systems it feels like a more natural addition than in the A-series, because the Ultrabay slot on the right of the A-series is towards the front of the machine, which makes the numpad not in line with the rest of the keyboard. On the other hand, only in the A30 series you can use the numpad in the right bay while still having an ODD / FDD / second HDD in the left bay. In other systems you either sacrifice the extra spindle for the numpad, or have to use a dock.

It does? In Ultrabay 2000-equipped ThinkPads?

If I remember it right, the Ultrabay 2000 never had a USB interface, so any USB-based device (such as the numpad) wouldn't work in a Ultrabay 2000.

No, I guess I was wrong. I had a false memory of it jokingly getting it to work in the Ultrabay 2000 left bay of the A31p. I'll go ahead and edit the above post. :)

I'm not that far away with at least 2 working spare A31p's. And due to the fact I'm moving out next month they will be out for sale! :)
Too many thinkpads not enough time!

Well after a few weeks I can finally update the thread with a pic of the numpad in a working A31p (lucky classfield find!).

Windows XP had no issues recognizing it and it works as one would expect. Does anyone know how to toggle numlock on the A31p though

Some pics too (warning, they're pretty big!):

Shift+ScrollLock, like on every Thinkpad of that era.

You can tell the key combination by looking at the keyboard -- NmLk is the same colour and relative position to ScrLk as the shifted symbols are to the digits. The same principle holds for all the key combinations, they are discoverable. Also if you feel the shape of each key you realise you can use the keyboard if you are blind or have limited use of your hands. The halcyon days when the machine-user interface was paramount.

Could you please post a picture of the ultrabay device carrier with the numpad removed? Also what the connector looks like on the numpad as well. Thanks :D

I'm curious if syncing with a workpad needs something else or not.

It's just a proprietary USB 1.1 connector, similar to the ultraport connector.
