T460s RAM - Black screen

#1 Post by Bonzocrux » Wed Aug 05, 2020 3:42 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, It is a pleasure to be part of this community. I am a owner of an old and glorious t430 and a t460s. In fact, I'm writing about the t460s. I have an issue. Basically i would like to upgrade my Ram but every stick that i tested makes my screen black. Even boot, cant see lenovo screen logo and can t access to BIOS also.
So my t460s has 4gb ddr4 soldered RAM.
I tested 3 different stick:

SODIMM DDR4 2400 MHz PC4-19200 8GB (1x8GB) = black screen

SODIMM 4GB DDR4 2133MHz PC4-17000 = not recognized

SODIMM DDR4, 2400 MT/s, PC4-19200, 8GB = black screen

The BIOS is updated, although it does not have the latest version, but only the previous one. Do you have any advice what I can do, could the pins on the motherboard be damaged?

Thanks

That's pickier than a T500. So, no advice for you. I don't have anything that new.

The T460s partslist has these FRUs:
03X7048 4GB DDR4 2133 SoDIMM Memory
03X7049 8GB DDR4 2133 SoDIMM Memory
03X7050 16GB DDR4 2133 SoDIMM Memory
And I guess there's also an (not available at list-publishing time) 32GB stick.

Does your laptop boot without any external RAM?
What was the brand/type you want to replace?

Hi Realblackstuff,

Yes laptop works great without external ram. Here are the brands I used:

Patriot DDR4 2400 MHz PC4-19200 8GB (1x8GB)

QUMOX 4GB DDR4 2133 2133MHz PC4-17000

Crucial 8 GB DDR4, 2400 MT/s, PC4-19200

Thank you

Can you go into Device Manager and check if there are any exclamation (!) marks?
What OS are you running?
Are all drivers up-to-date?
Do you know anyone with a T460s from whom you could borrow his/her memory stick?

Maybe it could be a voltage problem. I need to check if there is a CMOS battery on the motherboard under the keyboard.

Remove the backpanel, then the largest battery.
The CMOS battery is under that battery.
But I doubt that has anything to do with RAM.
Get a working RAM from someone.

Hello, I've had the same problem with one of the two memory slots in a T460p.
After trying to power up with one hand pressing slightly the module through the main board has shown that the slot has weak locks.
I had to thight a bit on the locking latches and soldering the metalic base of it.

This was a result of different type of slots, one of witch is better designed that the other.
