T61p with NVDIA Quadro FX 570M Graphics won't update to Windows 10 2004 Feature Update

#1 Post by E350 » Thu Sep 10, 2020 9:28 pm

"Microsoft has also issued a compatibility hold on Windows 10 devices utilizing NVIDIA drivers older than version 358.00.

"Nvidia and Microsoft have found incompatibility issues with certain versions of Nvidia display adapter drivers and Windows 10, version 2004 (the Windows 10 May 2020 Update). Windows 10 devices with affected Nvidia display driver versions might receive a stop error with a blue screen or other issues during or after installing the update to Windows 10, version 2004. The affected drivers are any version lower than 358.00."

To check the NVIDIA driver version installed in Windows 10, open the NVIDIA Control Panel and click on the 'System Information' link, as shown below by the red arrow.dows 10 2004 Feature update won't update NVDIA drivers below.

My driver is 341.74 so it is older than version 358.
And NVDIA does not have an updated driver 358 or newer.

I like Windows 10 and would like to update it.

Any suggestions how I can update to Windows 10?

Try doing it manually by running the Windows 10 2004 setup created with mediacreationtool.
I have a Dell Latitude E6400 with a Quadro NVS 160M and a Precision M4300 with Quadro FX 360M, both on driver version 342.00 (which is compatible with 140M and FX 570M as well) on Windows 10 2004 x64 and I've seen no problems so I think they've solved the problem by now.
EDIT: it's due to the memory integrity option being enabled as one of articles you linked suggest. Turn it off (and in fact on these Core 2 era hardware it's not even supported anyway because AFAIK it requires UEFI and secure boot support) and then run the setup and you should be able to upgrade to 2004.

Thank you! How do I disable the memory integrity option?

The Core Isolation page is not available because it does not apply to the T61p.

It's already disabled and cannot be enabled on your machine anyway. In this case, forcing it to update with the installation media of Windows 10 2004 does the job. Microsoft actually did say that the temporary safeguard blocking you to update has been removed but I don't know why it's not showing up here on my Latitude D830 in version 1903 either.
When you update to version 2004 though, install all the Windows updates (or at least install KB4568831 update) immediately so you don't face the bluescreen issues.

Thank you. It worked! Although it took forever. It shows as ver. 2004 now. And I did run Windows Update immediately thereafter. Couple of interesting things.

1. It boots faster.
2. Blacks look darker.
3. Smaller fonts looks sharper.
4. An update appeared for the NVDIA Quadro FX 570M Driver which despite my repeated attempts, never installed.
5. Neither the NVDIA Control Panel program and the NVDIA nView program in Windows program in Control Panel will open, so I can't see what driver I have for it.
6. I can't find the NVDIA Quadro FX 570M in Device Manager. Rather, Monitor is LCD 1680x1050 manufacturer: Lenovo, driver: Microsoft Basic Display Driver.

Okay that's a MAJOR problem you need to sort out. As of currently you will have basically no 3D graphical performance and you can see by the fact that it lags very badly when you drag just a window.
You will need to install the driver version either 341.74 or 342.00 from NVidia's website.

I am using Chief Architect Premiere which is a CAD program with 3D functions. When I installed it I got this message. But not since. However, now that I have upgraded Windows 10 to Feature Update 2004 this message again pops up as soon as I start the program:

C:\p4sync\dev\Releases\22\chief\source\appmgr.cpp(1120): Error #272032210
"You are using a video card that does not meet the software's minimum requirements. It is unlikely that you will be able to create 3D views."
9/13/2020 7:41:04 AM
Build: 22.3.0.55x64

I had been working only in the CAD part of the program for the last two days. But bingo, you were correct. As soon as I saw your post above, I tried but could not get the 3D functions to run.

I downloaded the NVDIA Control Panel for Windows 10 from the Microsoft Store.

But it wouldn't launch. It said it did not detect an NDVIA card in my system.

I then downloaded the ver. 342.01 driver from NVDIA Support.

https://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us

I know you mentioned the 342 driver, but I downloaded the ver. 342.01 instead. (It is the most current driver.) Any reason not to?

I also chose to do a "Custom" install, which allowed me to view that the four options for the driver were to be installed. I also chose to perform the "Clean Install" which did not save the current settings.

I can report that upon opening Chief Architect Premiere, I know longer receive a video card warning AND the 3D seems to be functioning properly.

PLEASE GO ABOUT YOUR DAY TODAY WITH THE SATISFACTION THAT YOU HELPED SOMEONE WHO WOULD OTHERWISE HAVE HAD A VERY BAD DAY TRYING TO SORT THIS OUT.

THANK YOU VERY, VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!

Edit: Windows Update now says this with respect to NVDIA Quadro FX 570M Driver (I will not update it): "A current driver on your PC may be better than the driver we're trying to install. We'll keep trying to install."

Huh you actually use such a Quadro card for real CAD work. I wonder what's the experience like with such an old Quadro card. Does this work on regular Quadro 140M 256MB cards (Dell has one) or do you need the Quadro FX cards to do this?

Well it doesn't exactly matter very much given that it works with your card just fine. Versions significantly newer than this no longer supports any of the NVS cards before the NVS 4200M used on the T420/T520.
Different installation options might give you more or less of some features that you may or may not use at all. I think for your usage your clean custom install does it perfectly.
Tbh I am quite surprised though that you are tinkering with these old machines but don't know about driver installations.

2008 T61p: Intel Core2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz; 8 Gb Crucial RAM; Crucial SSD 2Gb; upgraded BT daughter card; Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 with Middleton's BIOS.

What you see above is the extent of my knowledge. Everything I have learned about it, I learned here. Much from RealBlackStuff, rakawakami, axur-delmeria, ajkula66, and now you kfzhu1229.

I don't do CAD work as my job. But I use these computers in my job. The keyboard is key for me more than anything else. Maybe there is something better out there for my purposes, but since my 755C in 1986? IBM computers with replaceable parts as specified in the HMM have served me well.

Thank you again!

X220/X220t/T420/T520/W520 still have keyboard (same for all these models) similar to T61 and more CPU omph; not every one of these machines will have a discrete video card; not sure if you need discrete; keyboard layout subtly different from T61 but useable in my view
X230/X230t/T430/T530/W530 can be fitted with the same keyboard as models above but that requires tinkering with plastic, connector cable and BIOS/EC

For considerably more money there are T480/T25 Frankenpads, X2100 - though it will probably be too small for you at 13", T700 project based on 15" 4:3 T60/R60 also fitting 14.1" 4:3 T60/T60p; this one is months away I guess.

That's about all that comes to my mind when I think of the more modern options available to somebody who like me strongly prefers Thinkpads with classic keyboards. Classic keyboards can also be had as external keyboards. I'm rocking a couple of T520-s and feel happy with them. Well screen could be FHD, brighter and IPS :) Not really useable outdoors on sunny days. It's a bit strange, but the T60-s I have (12 years old) look like ancient legacy to me while T520 (8 years old) still feel modern enough. I tried a T440p keyboard yesterday. It is useable but I like it less and will not purchase one!

If you are rocking one of those T61 frankenpads with a 14.1" board, how do you even get away with doing CAD work in Windows 10? From my experience at anything higher than XGA or WXGA, in Windows 10 you don't need to do very much to use up the weak sauce 128MB of VRAM thsese 14.1" boards come with and then face all sorts of lag as it tries to use the 667Mhz RAM.
At least, this is my experience living with 128MB of VRAM from the NVS135M on the Latitude D830 compared to the 256MB on the Precision M4300.

It's a T61p 15.4" screen.
And in fact it may be too laggy for you.
I have learned to have lower standards as I have aged.
The laptop functions fine for me, I am the limiting factor. Not the laptop. (In fact my daily driver is a X61 2.4GHz or 2.5GHz similarly maxed out.)
But you are right, when I am spinning the three story house in 3D, I have to hit the space bar on the T61p quickly to stop it where I want.

But both the T61p and the X61 connect to BT headphones and speakers fine especially with a long range BT transmitter out of the 3.5mm receptacle and the Intel dual band 5GHz/2.4GHz half card connects well to our routers. And the T61p streams movies out of the dock's DVI to HDMI to the TV. So, it really does about everything I really need it to do and I can still get replacement parts for them. In fact, I have at least four of each of these type machines, so if push comes to shove (like a fan failure in the X61 machines) I can just swap everything over into a spare machine of the same model.

So, all I really need to use these Thinkpads forever, is to have you guys around when I am stumped.

And you stepped up, so thank you again.

An update (yes that's a pun  ):
It seems like Microsoft has completed its unblock for the Windows 10 2004 update by now, as my Dell Latitude D830 (with almost identical hardware as a 15.4" widescreen T61 but with a NVS135M graphics instead) with its Windows 10 version 1909 has received a forced update to Windows 10 2004 as shown in this screenshot below:
https://1drv.ms/u/s!At7-rt1KJ7WviPtZF85 ... A?e=ub6BqO
Well I suppose you could've also waited a few more days and you would've gotten it with much less hassle.

Actually my standards aren't as high as you might think. My first laptop was a ThinkPad T43, and for the most part, I have been daily drivering one with many many upgrades done to it over the years that it eventually became a 15" T43p, but I have been using such a laptop all the way until like last year when the T43p motherboard gave up due to chassis flex. I have had Windows 10 on it before it died and I know very well how to work with it.
Then I just happen to have this Latitude D830 and well just like a T61, this thing is a country mile faster than the T43p, and that's before I've planted a X9000 and max the RAM out to 8GB (Remember, the T43/p can only handle 2GB max). And I am glad to have a magnesium body because I've had quite enough of the cracking plastics and chassis flex on the T43/p (I've gone through two sets of palmrests and bottom covers and yet the palmrest is cracked near the right arrow key AGAIN)
And again as I said, the experience of this D830 is for the most part the same as rocking a safe post-0808 datecode T61 with a 9 cell battery (D830's ONLY come with 9 cell batteries and it doesn't bulge out). I could also use 256MB of VRAM by opting for the Precision M4300 board with the Quadro FX 360M, but I think I can take this VRAM tradeoff for a cooler running machine and longer running battery. Gotta say though playing with the X9000 is quite fun. I have options to let it run stock but undervolted, an overclock to 3.2Ghz and an even more aggressive overclock to 3.4Ghz.

The T61p boots faster. I thought it was my imagination, but the 2004 Feature update has made it boot faster IMHO.

Also the Chief Architect Premiere X12 CAD program is only laggy when the cursor movement keys are used to move an object. When the object's handle is used, it is not laggy.

Finally, the X61 2.4GHz just updated to Windows 10 Feature update 2004 without a hitch.

I am now in the process of updating my wife's T61p 2.4GHz, we shall see if I have a NVDIA driver problem.
