Maybe they'll make a 14" 16:10 next year. You never know.

Too small, no optical drive, probably doesn't even have an Ethernet port.

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
To be honest, I'm not particularly upset about ports. One to dock to a monitor, which has a hub for keyboard, mouse etc, and one spare which would be rarely used, maybe handy to plug in a camera / phone / memory card occasionally is just about tolerable. Really don't care about an optical drive - is this a use-case that people really want ? If it's very occasional use to rip something, then an external one would do. I don't even use wired networking much, though I guess there is a stronger case that can be made for it than the optical drive. I don't think it's all bad as a super portable machine. For me, a slightly bigger screen would be good. It would be nice to have a headphone socket. Of course the old keyboard would be the icing on the cake, but I guess that's my strange request ! (It would make it fractionally thicker, but I wouldn't care).

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
Different folks have different requirements.
I ran wires so I would not have to connect wireless. And I use the optical drive to copy discs and install from them, and once in a while play a video. For me a wired Ethernet port and an optical drive are Required as is the capability for an additional storage device and preferably a docking connector.

No, not yet. Replace the Intel crap with AMD and fix the broken keyboard layout (at least to be like HP Envy layout or optional FN-ed on cursor keys).

A 17 inch 16:10 screen is the same height as a 15 inch 4:3 screen (9 inches). If Lenovo produces a 2kg such laptop, it may finally be time to retire my T601 laptops.

Yep, that's why the 1.35 kg (2.98 lb) LG Gram 17 series with 17" 2560x1600 remains the most interesting laptop IMO, especially the new model that came out just a couple months ago:

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
16:10 is a great news, but why on earth would they do only 2 usb C ports??
full size hdmi is a must, at least 1 usb A is a must, mini jack is must!
building something narrow is easy. Building something useful and quite narrow, that's really important. No need to make a XPS13 like laptop. Just make a thinkpad!

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
With Thunderbolt you get DisplayPort so you can connect to any modern monitor, and there seem to be lots of cheap Thunderbolt to HDMI cables if you really want to connect to HDMI (please correct me if I'm wrong in this, I get all this stuff mixed up sometimes, but I think this is right ?). So maybe tolerable, even though they've gone minimal on the number and type of ports ?
If not I guess you've got to go up the scale of X1C / T14s / T14 until you find a machine that gives you what you want. In my opinion there are too many, undifferentiated Thinkpads, you could probably cull 50% of the range without harm !
Anyway, I think there'll be a headphone / audio jack, the leaked slide says "2 x Thunderbolt4 USB-C | Audio Jack".

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
thanks for the news.
IT looks good, if only it didnt have only 2 USB C. I know you can do everything with adaptors, but I really think it hurts usability. Also, remember the X300 commercial vs the macbook air and all the adaptors?
Also, i really dont think adding 4 or 5 ports hurts the design much, if at all.
I only hope it is quite successful to make lenovo understands people who do dont want 16:9.
Interestingly, X1 Titanium (Yoga) is leaked too (it was the next video on youtube). But it looks exactly like my X1 Yoga (in particular, on the render, it seems to be still 16:9. But the render can be wrong). Also, they use magnetic pen and no more docked? Weird idea. I prefer real pen to the docked one, but I am really happy to have my docks pen handy whenever I need it. Oh, and also the nonsensical 2 usbC port and nothing else. What would be the point of a grey thinkpad with the same design but less ports than a X1 Yoga?? I really believe the render is wrong on several front, at least for the titanium (the X1 Nano seems more legit).

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
The usb-c mini dock solves the port issues for me when plugged/charging. I believe the Tiger Lake cpu options for the X1 Nano will be 15W? So the power draw on the X1 Nano should be less than the 45W that the mini dock can provide. By comparison, the T14s with 4750u amd processor (15W tdp) only draws ~40W max under load.
Having all of charging, ethernet, and whatever usb peripherals connect with a single usb-c port is very elegant and clean. However, on the go it is a shame for such a sleek, portable laptop to have to carry adapters around if you want the same level of connectivity.

I love it when folks take away a feature, the excuse was to "save costs".
Then they add this New Feature 16:10 screen back in, as a Premium Feature with premium price?
At least 16:10 or similar screen displays might be coming back now;
there's a whole generation of (newer) computer users arguing that there's "very" little difference between 16:9 vs 16:10 without ever working with one.
And our T410 with 16:10 ratio screen is still in daily use!

I have worked and still work with both on a daily basis and I say the difference is not so significant. The difference between 4:3 and 16:10 is bigger. Never understood the whine about 16:9.

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
In general I agree - if you can live with 16:10, you can live with 16:9. I would say there are two valid complaints though:
1. Inefficiency: 16:9 is not well suited for a modern laptop format, because if you have a spacious touchpad and a keyboard with more than 5 rows, you almost always end up with huge screen bezels especially below the screen on 14 inch and smaller. And 15.6 inch devices end up much wider than they have to be for a full-size keyboard without numpad.
2. Small devices: While it works fine on 13.3 inch upwards, I think for smaller laptops, 16:9 is just too limited in physical screen height.

If you can live with 16:10, you can live with 16:9; if you can live with 16:9, you can live... How about 16:1?
Actually, I'd just about decided I could live with 16:10, when they went to 16:9, so I stocked up with Frankenpads.
Is the X1 Titanium 3:2? That would be very interesting.

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
I agree that 16:10 and 16:9 are close enough aspect ratios. So what really matters to me between them are resolution and quality. However, a laptop is a sum of many different metrics including performance, portability, and aesthetics. In Q2 2018 I changed from WUXGA T500 to FHD and 7 row T430, accepting the minor resolution downgrade in favor of better screen quality, performance, portability, and sexier design. Going back into screen metrics exclusively (physical dimensions notwithstanding), the only compromise from the T500's 1200 rows was resolved when I next built QHD T430s with the RMSMajestic adapter with a whopping 1440 rows. At present I use a QHD T420 after my T430s's Nvidia gfx failed.
With the QHD resolution I can fit four 1280x700 windows in each corner of the screen, or two 1280x1400 windows in both halves of the screen, or two 1280x700 in one half and one 1280x1400 in the other half, with no overlap between the windows.
I feel like if my unit had a WQXGA resolution with an extra 160 rows, the extra 11% of vertical scaling in each of my little windows (about 77 pixels or two Windows taskbars) is really of negligible to no boost in productivity. 2560x1440 does the job just fine.
OTOH upgrading to 4K (3840x2160) would yield me the ability to stack three 1280x707 windows atop each other or three side by side through manual placement. Unfortunately I will never daily get a 4K unit unless it's somehow modded into the T43/20/s or I can budget the T480/T25 FrankenPad. So don't think for a second that any major laptop manufacturer cares about the opinions of a bottom feeder like me.

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
This is what I've learned while playing around with 16:9 15" and 17" gaming laptops, and a 34" 1440p ultrawide gaming monitor. I've found I can tolerate 16:9 1080p on 14" or larger (1200 or 1440 vertical pixels minimum on 17" or larger), but for 10"-13" displays I require taller aspect ratios like 4:3, 3:2 or 16:10. Physically, 12.1" SXGA+ is vertically similar to 13" WUXGA and 14" FHD.
OTOH upgrading to 4K (3840x2160) would yield me the ability to stack three 1280x707 windows atop each other or three side by side through manual placement.
Native 4K would kill me on a 14" laptop. o_O

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
Right, but then you lose "the ability to stack three 1280x707 windows atop each other or three side by side through manual placement." I'm just saying that my eyes would bleed with 4K in a 14" and 100% dpi scaling for the sake of stacking more windows.
Sigh, "up to 16GB ram". Why this limitation, when the xps 13 supports up to 32gb? It's still a winner by comparison due to trackpoint and keyboard. I'm just concerned when 16gb no longer cuts it in the way my X62 needed an upgrade from 8gb to 16gb. Yet with soldered ram upgrading memory won't be an option.Ibthink wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 5:15 amThe ThinkPad X1 Nano has now been officially unveiled: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Th ... 119.0.html

Re: 16:10 returns to ThinkPads: The X1 Nano
Just listened to the X1 days videocast.
Disapointed to not hear about the titanium.
X1 fold: nice engineering, but no thank you. The keyboard is a nice thought though.
X1 nano: best in class connectivity....well, have you looked at your other products?
So i am still waiting!

Still broken keyboard layout and no AMD Ryzen option. But it is a good start to get rid of the 16:9 idiocy.
