OG XBOX CMOS
I been doing reading on CMOS with consoles and the Cbomb. During reading I saw that the OG XBOX CMOS can destroy the system board if it would leak. I took apart my OG XBOX "Never been open" The first thing I found in witch was a good thing I did open it was 2 dead stink bugs inside. I hate these bugs and yes they can get inside your ThinkPads too through the CPU vents and crawl over the heatsink and onto the board to short it. But anyway I looked for a CMOS and mine doesn't have a coin CMOS, I found a cap that says 2.5v gold and black in color. I am guessing this is the onboard time cap. It isn't puffed nor leaking and it is actually flat on top. The time and date from the last time I used the system was showing signs that the internal battery was dead as when I unplugged the console and plug it back in the time and date would reset.
Reading this forum it says I should remove the cap. https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/c ... _and_fail/ Now I don't care if the system time/date is always off as I hardly play this system and should I remove this cap? I probably will not replace it.
Since I have the console open I may clean and add new thermal paste to the cpu and gpu. It is probably hard clay at this point, 2004.

Re: OG XBOX CMOS
Maybe do some reading up on electronics instead?
The cap they are talking about on Reddit is a capacitor, quite different from a CMOS battery.

I know that is not a CMOS.

Re: OG XBOX CMOS
AFAIK on laptops nobody uses a capacitor to keep the time/date, they all use CMOS.
(And I know nothing about XBOX).
Which makes your post a bit confusing, because you keep talking about CMOS and keeping time and removing a capacitor...
According to this post, if you remove that cap, it won't boot.
They also say to leave it on for a while, so that cap can charge up some.

Re: OG XBOX CMOS
PlayStation Consoles uses CMOS and XBOX consoles use a capacitor to hold their time and date. The consoles today are more close to PC then before. There was a discover of what is called Cbomb "CMOS Bomb". It meant that once the CMOS died and that console manufacturer Sony / Microsoft severs were shutdown for that console, all digital and physical games cannot be played anymore on that such console. I did a test for my self on my first gen PS4 since the CMOS was dead in it and replaced it. Didn't reconnect system to PlayStation network and my physical game discs wouldn't play. It would start the game and then after 10 sec it would jump you out of the started up game back to the dashboard with a error code ["User Name" will be logged out of the PS4 because an error has occurred (CE-30391-6)]
OG XBOX and XBOX 360 along with PS3 are fine with physical but not with digital download. PS4,PS5, XBOX One, XBOX Series X/S require internet.

Re: OG XBOX CMOS
you can (and should) remove that capacitor on all v1.0 up to v1.5 xbox and no issues will happen. the 1.6 version (latest xbox mobo revision) indeed fails to boot without the capacitor but if you bridge the points it will also perfectly boot. it just takes a 15sec solder job to have the 1.6 resolved as wellRealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Sun Aug 08, 2021 2:04 amAFAIK on laptops nobody uses a capacitor to keep the time/date, they all use CMOS.
