Intel Pentium M 765 in T41
Intel Pentium M 765 in T41
I put a PM 765 (2.1 GHz) in my T41 and it would not boot. I have heard this processor works. I'm assuming that because the computer won't turn on the CPU is not working. Was there something I missed? I just took out the old CPU (1.7 GHz) and put in the new one.

Re: Intel Pentium M 765 in T41
765 is a Dothan whereas the original 1.7 ghz is a Banias. I think you may have to update the T41's BIOS before you can use the Dothan.

Re: Intel Pentium M 765 in T41
1.6 and 1.7Ghz come in both Banias and Dothan flavours. If it had 1MB Cache it's Banias, 2MB is Dothan. But yes for Banias -> Dothan a BIOS update is necessary
If after the BIOS update it still wouldn't work then you will have to check where you bought the CPU. There are a lot of fake CPU's for Pentium M 765 and you may find yourself falling into victim for one of them...GColgrove wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 8:11 amI put a PM 765 (2.1 GHz) in my T41 and it would not boot. Re: Intel Pentium M 765 in T41
I brought the BIOS down to 3.05 and the embedded controller down to 3.00. Then I reflashed both back to the latest. The CPU still didn’t work.
I got the CPU from China. Only place I could find the processor. It originated from Hong Kong.
I have pics of both sides of the chip but dont know how to post them.
The vender claims they tested the chip before sending it.
They put a Chinese symbol on the chip (in ink) for warranty purposes.

That CPU is probably bad then, sadly. They can die or be fake.
Merits of CPU upgrading aside, what I tried out and worked to speed up an R50p was getting an IDE to mSATA adapter and running an mSATA SSD, even TRIM worked on Windows 7.

If you don't have things like imgur, try uploading them to a cloud service like google drive or onedrive and just share us the link.GColgrove wrote: ↑Thu Jul 14, 2022 8:37 pmI brought the BIOS down to 3.05 and the embedded controller down to 3.00. I also would like to see the exact listing you purchased it from on eBay.
Not all Chinese sellers sell fake CPU's. I have my whitelist of sellers that always send me working CPU's. I usually see all the neutral and negative feedbacks of a seller's profile to see if there are any evidence of scam. Ignore the comments made by buyers with unreasonable expectations of course, but if you see a Core 2 duo T7600 listing with a negative feedback saying the CPU does not work for instance, that would be a red flag.
If by the end of the day that CPU turned out to be fake and then you got your money back, I would recommend you a Pentium M 755, or if you can get ahold of a Pentium M 725 (1.6Ghz, 2M, Dothan), get that and overclock its FSB to 533Mhz, and that will give you a cheap and effective processor that will outperform a Pentium M 765. You can do the same with your 1.7Ghz chip if it's a Dothan Pentium M 735 but you may need to overvolt it.

I don’t think I can clock up a Thinkpad t41.
I gave up on the 2.1 ghz 765. I ordered a 2.0 ghz 760. People said there wasn’t much difference anyway.
My current processor isn’t the Dorthan version of the 1.7 ghz.

Refund the CPU immediately. eBayer gift.for.today is on my blacklist for selling fake CPU's as I observed with the negative feedbacks and how sometimes they offer prices that are too much cheaper than the competition.GColgrove wrote: ↑Thu Jul 14, 2022 10:16 pmhttps://www.ebay.com/itm/282513151994?m ... media=COPY

Well if you order the Pentium M 760, unfortunately you are forced to clock up the FSB... If you don't, the Pentium M 760 will run at a mere 1.5Ghz! This is because all the Pentium M 7x0 chips are 533Mhz FSB chips, and 7x5 chips are all 400Mhz FSB chips.
For you to overclock the FSB to 533mhz, it is more involved than the case with getting Pentium M 7x0 to run on 533Mhz on T43.
You will need to first find 333Mhz or 400Mhz DDR RAM sticks, with at least one being SPD unlocked, then modify the SPD using SPDTool, and then move a resistor across on the motherboard, which tricks the clock generator into giving 533Mhz FSB signals.
But then after you successfully performed this trick, you can make do with the much cheaper Pentium M 725 and enjoy 2.16Ghz of clock out of it!
P.S. If you go for a CPU that's not worth much money at all, it is unlikely that you will receive a fake CPU even from shady sellers, but rather sometimes you can get things like BGA479 converted chips with solder balls replaced with pins.

Re: Intel Pentium M 765 in T41
Yup, looks like I did a boneheaded move on the 760. I should have ordered the 755. I didn’t pay that much for the 760. I paid $10 for the 760 (inc. shipping). If it works, I can sell it and get my $$ back.
I won’t be doing any overclocking. I’ll just have to order the 755 or get another 765 from a reputable seller.
What China dealers have you whitelisted?
Thank you for your help. Greatly appreciated.

Re: Intel Pentium M 765 in T41
Pentium M 760 will definitely work on the T41, just at 1.5Ghz, so that would enable you to see if it fully works and then sell it.
Here is one from a seller that I bought Core 2 duo T8300's from that turned out to work: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/131747607411?ha ... SwyjBW4F1P
I am hoping that you will get a real CPU from this too as to no pleasure I am gonna have to tell you this is more than 5 times the price I've paid for in 2020! I paid £5 per piece back then! I have no clue why something this old inflates in price so much but it is what it is.
This definitely incentifies me to keep doing the FSB mods instead of getting more of these overpriced chips...
Alternatively, here is a Pentium M 745 also from a seller that I bought from previously: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/272332204058?ep ... SwCCVdXetL
This price is much more reasonable.
