If your T410 has nVidia graphics, you may need a thermal pad (for the GPU) in case the old one gets torn while removing the heatsink.

I'm fairly ignorant about such things. I run Linux Mint and it tells meaxur-delmeria wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 12:27 amIf your T410 has nVidia graphics, you may need a thermal pad (for the GPU) in case the old one gets torn while removing the heatsink.
~$ inxi -G
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel Core Processor Integrated Graphics driver: i915 v: kernel
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa
tty: N/A
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel Ironlake Mobile v: 2.1 Mesa 19.0.8
Which I think means I am not running nVidia. I think. But I don't know about the machine I took the fan out of. I do know there is only one copper arm from the GPU to heat sink, while some have 2.

You can run 'lspci' on a terminal windows to check if there's an nVidia GPU or not.

Re: T410 fan change-heat paste what and how
are there good and bad pastes? Since I'll probably use it once or twice in my remaining life, I'd prefer to go with the cheapest viable option. Looks like that one is about twice the cost of some others ($14 vs 6 or 7)RealBlackStuff wrote: ↑Sun Jan 22, 2023 1:03 amHow to: http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appmeth ... d_v1.1.pdf

Your MTM (in the BIOS or on the sticker at the laptop-bottom) should tell you if you have nVidia or not.
Depending where you look, paste prices are much lower than what you come up with!
US prices are also better than EU prices...

Nothing on the label and I can't get into BIOS because if I shut down I'll get a fan error and it may not start again.
But I think I may have found it using lshw command, but you tell me

Then it doesn't have nVidia graphics. You don't have to worry about it. Most T410's only had Intel HD graphics.
You don't need the thermal pad then.
BTW, did you lubricate the fan axle? My dad's X220 gave a Fan Error the other day, and oiling the fan got rid of the error.

I haven't even opened the dysfunctional laptop yet, but I'll check it out when I do. I'm hoping its just filthy and stuck. However, looking at the parts fan I have here I have no idea how I'd lube it.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 3:45 amThen it doesn't have nVidia graphics. You don't have to worry about it. Re: T410 fan change-heat paste what and how
In some designs, there are small screws that hold the fan and heatsink together. Once you remove those screws, you can separate the fan unit from the heatsink. On the Thinkpads I've owned (mostly X series), the fan hub can be separated from the motor by gently pulling at it. From there you can put a drop of light oil on either the fan axle, or on the bushings on the motor itself. I use Singer sewing machine oil, but other forum members mentioned automatic transmission fluid.
Oh, one more thing: some heatsinks have some adhesive tape that covers the small gap between the edge of the fan unit and the cooling fins. I generally use aluminum foil tape to replace that, but there might be better options though not easily obtainable.

Re: T410 fan change-heat paste what and how
There doesn't seem to be any need to remove the existing foil tape. Assuming its identical, I'm just going to replace the entire assembly if cleaning the problem fan doesn't work.axur-delmeria wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 10:15 pmIn some designs, there are small screws that hold the fan and heatsink together.
