Help!: X1 Carbon 2024 with Touchpad Problems

#1 Post by iRun26.2 » Tue Sep 03, 2024 11:56 am

I have ordered, received, and love my new ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 12): Fast, light, and beautiful. However, there is one very serious problem with it. I ordered the model with the touchpad (without separate buttons) and it randomly clicks by itself. I have checked all the settings and everything (including the sensitivity which is on least sensitive) and nothing fixes it. This is the second one I have tried and, though this had nothing to do with the reason I returned the first one, I think the first one had a similar problem.

1) Has anyone else noticed this? Is there something I could be missing (I think I've tried everything) to stop it accidentally clicking (all the time)?
2) Can I assume that Levono would not release a product with such a defect (should I go through warrantee repair while I still have the right to return it)?
3) Should I just order another one and return this unit?

I'm really hoping someone with a touchpad (without separate buttons) can tell me that theirs is working just fine. I have no plans to use an external mouse. Without this working, I'm going to want a different machine (maybe a Dell...horrors)!

Thanks in advance!

I should mention... The 'self-clicking' only takes place when my fingers are on the touch pad. I don't apply any force but moving my fingers around will trigger a 'click' though I didn't come close to pushing with the required force.

I ordered another model exactly what I have to see if the new model has the problem. If the problem is gone with the new model (exact spec) then I will return the one that is giving me the problem and keep the one that works. If the new one also shows the problem then I will return them both and order one that just has a trackpad and dedicated buttons. That really is not what I want but I think I could get used to it. I cannot get used to self-clicking that I have now...

I just got testing another ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 (I returned the one I wrote about eariler). It does the same thing! At first it seemed to work perfectly, never doing a false click when my fingers were on the trackpad. Now, though, the next day, it is doing it all of the time. This means that it must have an inherent fault or there is something that I am doing wrong. I have checked all of the settings. It doesn't matter what the sensitivity is set to. It triggers all by itself when I software move the cursor around with the trackpad. My MacBook Pro (2020) never does this! Wow!

Do you have the X1C12 with the Clunkpad?
A would-be Mac copy?
I.e. a touchpad without buttons (also known as "haptic" touchpad)?
Are you aware that you can also get that model with the classic touchpad-with-buttons?
You can probably send yours back for a swap.

Some more X1C12 info here.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)
But I actually prefer Murphy's from Cork!

Yes, thanks, for the reply. The older trackpad version was my next (final) option. I called technical support and they wanted me to send the computer that was giving me troubles in so they could investigate it. I didn't really like that idea because I thought that would remove my ability to send it back in for replacement and get the 'normal' trackpad and buttons. (I'm really glad I didn't do that now that I am seeing the same problem on another unit)! I bet all units with the 'Apple'-copy trackpad have the same problem.

I think that the hinged trackpad in the other option doesn't have anything to do with clicking (that the clicking comes only from the separate buttons). Then I might go back to using the pointing stick *track-point???" that I liked many years ago. I don't like buying computers and then returning them but if they haven't done their homework and there is something wrong with the touchpad without separate buttons then I have no choice. I would expect that it would just work...but it does not.
