USB device not recognized - Mini Card?

#1 Post by lemonstar » Tue Oct 18, 2011 8:06 am

I replaced the old drive in a T60 with a new SATA-II drive and installed Win7 Ultimate. I've not installed any Thinkpad/Lenovo specific drivers or software.
On start-up I get a notification in the taskbar that says:-

"USB Device not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."

I don't have any USB devices attached, in fact, I hadn't plugged in any devices since I installed the HD & OS.

Looking in device manager under "Universal serial Bus Controllers" I see:-
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controler - 27CA
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controler - 27CB
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controler - 27C8
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controler - 27C9
Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controler - 27CC
Unknown Device /* hmm? */
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

The first thing I tried was uninstalling the device but when I booted I still got the same "Not recognized" warning and the icon back in the Device Manager list.
I have now used a USB memory stick to check that all 3 USB ports are able to recognise(i.e. read) the files on the device and they can. (Actually I haven't tried writing any files)
In device manager I did a scan for hardware changes and a Device Driver Installation dialog appears listing a "Mini Card" but it is unable to find a driver so is this the cause of the "Not recognized" warning and do I have to go and find a driver from Lenovo? What is this "Mini Card" - the slot with the flap on the left left hand side of the machine looks like a PCMCIA card slot. Inside it looks like it will take 1 PCMCIA card and another smaller card (the Mini Card) at the top - what is this Mini Card? A PCI card? An obsolete format or something still in use? For anything specific or is it general purpose?

So as a general point - what other Thinkpad software is actually necessary or recommended? My model is CTO-2007.
cheers Neil

Right-click on properties for "unknown device" brings tabbed dialog up & under General tab is says: Location Port_#0002.Hub_#0004.
On the "Details" tab it just says "unknown device"

I don't have any external USB devices connected and, apart from the USB stick I just used in each port to test basic functionality, there have been no USB devices connected to the machine.

I have, however, just noticed in the Devices & Printers dialog that there is a USB type icon next to the icon for the T60 that is described as a BCM2045B with a category of "Bluetooth Radio" - I have no idea what that is!

Is the fingerprint reader classed as a USB device - it's not showing up in the device manager, where should it be? Since installing Win7 I hadn't thought to install drivers for the fingerprint reader. I installed the Win7 drivers but (from memory) the software popped up the dialogue for registering a fingerprint scan after I rebooted but failed with some error message - like "unknown error". I had a dig around google and came across a couple of suggestions - both based on the idea that a quirk of the win7 operating system design is that the default administrator account can not be used to register fingerprint scans so one suggestion was to create another administrator account; this didn't work. Another suggestion, again based on this same idea, was to install the older drivers for Vista/XP; this didn't work either. So - is the fingerprint reader the device that is causing the original problem of an "Device not recognized"? Does it definitely suggest the fingerprint reading hardware is faulty or is this just the problem of not being able to get drivers installed so that win7 can recognize the device?
