Putting X61t body into X60t?

#1 Post by chubbyfatazn » Wed Oct 26, 2011 9:49 pm

Hey all,

It's getting a bit harder and harder to find one of these tablets at 1400x1050. My question is, would it be possible to switch over my current X61t's motherboard into an X60t? I have no interest in switching the screen over. I figured it would be simpler to just unscrew the motherboard from the base and do a straight swap.

Unless, of course, the motherboard and base come as one unit. I've seen a thread here of a member asking the same question, but he never updated with a confirmation. Thanks!

The motherboard can be removed from the base, although in most machines it's far more complicated than an LCD assembly swap.

Why don't you swap the X60t lid (presumably with SXGA+) onto your X61t? Much easier.

I suppose I could do that. I didn't want to deal with undoing the hinge and cables only to find out I broke something in the process.

It's just a straight swap, correct? Undo the hinge, LCD and inverter cable, and move everything over? Thanks again.

I believe the only problem in moving parts around is that the pen switch mounts differently in the 2 machines (x60t vs. x61t) so it must match the case. The switch must also match the motherboard because the connector is different.

I actually just did the swap tonight. I kind of wanted to swap out the rear LCD cover, too, but after looking at the HMM I decided it was too much work...

One question. I can't get the hinge caps to go back on. When I took it off, there were two pieces. The smaller piece I took off won't snap into place, and as such I can't get the bigger cap to lock into place. Any advice? Thanks!

For reference, it's page 60 of the HMM (http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... 551_02.pdf).

Did you turn the LCD as per HMM (in reverse order as described)?

Yep. Screen down and closed when attempting to reinstall the smaller cap, and up in tablet position when attempting to reinstall the larger one.

I see the two pegs and the guiding clip on the bottom of the smaller cap, but I can't get them to securely snap into place. I tried with both sets of hinge caps I have, so I'm doing something wrong.

On a side note, since I'm here, I might as well post a summary of the swap. For starters, I didn't follow the HMM exactly. Once you remove the keyboard, bezel, and palm rest, you might want to remove the LCD extend board (in both X60t and X61t) since it's in the way of the wifi cables. After that, it's just a straight swap. None of the messiness of the SXGA mod for a regular X61/X60. In addition, even though the screws from the X60t and X61t possess the same label (1, 2, 3, etc), they're different sizes. I segregated them into different piles from the start so I didn't run into problems, but some of them (1 and 3) are different lengths. I tried to use the X60t screws in the X61t, and they were too small.

The screen looks great. The text is actually a bit small for my 19-year-old eyes, so I downsize to XGA when on battery. I love being able to fit more on my screen, though. It's great for all the reading I have to do. Outdoor legibility is not that great, so if you can find an X61t to do the swap for I'd recommend that.
