Need a new router for my X61. N or G.
Basically what i'm asking, is the internal wireless card in the X61 capable of receiving a faster N signal, or is it designed for the G. If only the G, is there any point in getting a N router.

that depends on the wireless card you got. If it is only abg wireless you got, then getting N router won't boost your speed, but it does mean that they can used with newer laptops with n wireless card if you decide to take that course of action in the future.

As with nearly all ThinkPad models, more than one internal wifi adapter was offered with the X61. You can check the device manager to find out the exact model wifi adapter you have and then search Google or post here to verify its capabilities.paul*robertson wrote:It has the built in wireless card.
One note about N routers, some have 10/100 ports and some have Gigabit ports. It general, Gigabits are preferred (and 10X faster than 10/100). This is especially useful if you plug a server, NAS, or computer, etc., directly into the router.

Intel R Wireless 4965 AG. I assume thats the G network.
The 4965AN is available fairly cheaply. Is it an easy job to swap, thereby giving me a faster download (as long as i bought an N router)

You need to remove keyboard and KB bezel to access the wifi card.
Swapping that out then only takes a few seconds.
To avoid heat, get an Intel 6200N half-size card with a half-size adapter.
For these Intel cards (5xxx and 6xxx) to work, you need to flash the BIOS.
