to the modders: keyboard problem

#1 Post by achat_2 » Sat Oct 29, 2011 10:03 am

I thought to post here (instead of X200 subforum) assuming there is a larger density of modders :)

Does anybody as any idea or suggestion on how I could try to make silent very noisy trackpoint buttons, (on a NMB keyboard for an X201s thinkpad,) without putting under risk the laptop itself?

I see there is a black plastic base exactly where the buttons sit in the laptop base.
May be safe to put some kind of soft tape here, about 1 millimeter thick in this space, i.e. between the metal plate and the black plastic?

The buttons sound loud like if there is some sort of empty space underneath, which let the entire metal plate resound when pressed.

Curiosly I have a Chicony keyboard for the same model, with noisy keys and completely silent trackpoint buttons...

You could probably swap out the trackpoint buttons from Chicony to NMB (and v.v.)
Otherwise a thin piece of felt or a felt pad (feltrone?) might do it.

thanks, can you please explain a bit how could I do that?
should I force the small black plastic things to get out of the holes in the metal plate?
is an entire block under the space bar, or it would result in 4 different pieces?
sorry I never did something similar :)

fixed with adhesive part on the metal plate, for example?

Edit: Is there any possiblity that such operation would void the warranty?
