X40 New Hard Drive - Won't boot from CD

#1 Post by rmclaren » Sat Oct 29, 2011 2:37 pm

I replaced the 40GB hard drive in my X40. The new one looked identical to the old one. The drive shows in the Boot list under StartUp. When I put the OS disk in the CD, the computer keeps trying to access the hard drive (clicking sound) and ultimately brings up the message that there is a Fixed Disk Error. I managed to boot into SpinRite, but it didn't like the disk and recommended not proceeding. I have tried booting Ubuntu, Windows 7, and Lenovo PC Doctor without success. The furthest I got was with Windows 7, but it couldn't find the hard drive. I also tried booting from an external CD Drive, again without success. I have run Windows XP and various versions of Ubuntu on this X40 for several years without a problem. Am I doing something wrong?

Welcome to the forum.

Try Super FDISK. If that doesn't run, then this new drive is defective.
