Creation of Recovery CDs more than once - X40

#1 Post by KenFodder » Fri Apr 08, 2005 10:03 am

I haven't created them yet because I am waiting for my CDRW to arrive soon.

Can you use the IBM app in windows to create the discs more than once. I read somewhere that once you have created one set, any subsequent attempts there is a pop up saying your only allowed to have one set, but didn't detail as to whether you could or couldn't create another set?

Basically can you create more than one set using that app, eg the first time there was a misburn or, it crashed or summat.

Thanks guys.

Ken,

The utility only allows you to burn one set of CDs. The only way I know of to circumvent this limitation is to burn a set of CDs then restore the unit from the recovery partition and you can burn another set.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

Really don't see why you can only create them once, as soon as you create a working set, you can reproduce them later. The restriction doesn't help the fact if you created initially a duff set means calling IBM.

1) Do you think that IBM will charge me if I said that I don't have a CDRW and only a CDROM for the laptop they will send a free set? Just bought the machine 2 weeks ago.

2) How many CDs exactly did it create?

FYI - I'm in the UK, I know most of you guys are stateside.

Cheers.

there exist virtual drive programs that make iso's and act like cdrw drives. if you had iso's you could copy them accross a network to a desktop machine and burn them as many times as you would like.

The amount of recovery CDs are probably tracked in the registry. So if someone was to look in the right place, I am sure you can easily replace the pointer.

The other option is to create a restore point in XP and then create your disc set. After it is done, just do a system restore.

I have an X24 and there is no option to create recovery CDs. So you will have to try this and let us know.

Well, at least in Canada, you need to have a valid reason to request a free set of CDs. You need to provide proof that you are upgrading your hard drive (i.e. fax them a receipt). I'm not sure if you can request a free set if you simply said you screwed up your recovery partition etc. This is was the case when I got them to ship me a set for my thinkpad.

Uhm, if you've made one set, can't you just use any recording software to duplicate the burned cdr's (or save them to iso images) or am I missing something?

Well off course I did mention that in my post so you are missing something, is if the initial creation of the discs were corrupt, ie the discs that were created didn't work.

Just realised if they didn't work first time then I would have to find out the hard way, and I wouldn't be able to create the discs again cause the OS would've been blown away.

If they turn out to be duff then I will have a go at IBM and get them to send me some free ones as I have a right to create a copy and if the creation if duff them it is not my fault.

the utility verifies each CD it makes..
if it makes a bad CD you get to try again..

don't use EL CHEAPO non-branded CD's, use a good branded CD..
othertwise your chances of a bad burn or a bad verify goes WAAY up.. :)
