T43p Problem with 15" screen?
T43p Problem with 15" screen?
Ordered a T43p 2668H3A 2 wks ago, but was told IBM was still sourcing the parts (so no estimated delivery date as yet). Then today, received a call from IBM informing me that they have a problem with the 15" screen on my model, and offering the following at the same price:
1. Downgrade to 14" screen
2. Add in additional 512MB RAM
3. Will ship out by end of next wk
I am not in a big hurry to get the laptop, but neither am I glad to wait for a long time for it. Not so sure if I need the 15" screen, but I think I would prefer to have the FlexView.
Any comments on this, and have anyone else heard the same thing from IBM?

Re: T43p Problem with 15" screen?
It's a lousy offer. RAM is easy to upgrade. A display is virtually impossible to upgrade (at least 14" to 15").
I'm sure you could get an equivalent 14" T43 for less $.

While the price difference between 14" and 15" is not high (I think it was only $50 when the T42 launched, albeit for screens of the same resolution), you're giving up A LOT by going from UXGA to SXGA+ for a lousy 512MB stick, which you can almost get for $50 at a yard sale. It's like everyone else is saying - Nothing wrong with 14" or SXGA+, it's just that you're really getting NOTHING extra for the same price, and you're giving up something that you can never get back with an upgrade.
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

I agree with everyone here that this is an unworthy deal. Never heard such an offering neither. You placed the order two weeks ago and he promised to ship if it is at 14.1" model? I am not sure about this since a lot of ppl in this forum placed order since Feb and some were 14.1" SXGA+ but noone comes close to actually getting it in his hand yet.

I'm not sure about T43p but I can make some comment about T43.
I own a T43 (266884M) 15" FlexView model and have a red stuck pixel on LCD. It is only noticeable on white but still bothers me from time to time.
I think IBM has some quality issues at the moment with the latest LCD's as I have already seen at least two posts in this forum from T43 users whose LCD have two or more dead or stuck pixels.
Well, I may be the lucky one as I only have just one red dot rather than multiple...
Some people can argue that LCD's on ThinkPads are manufactured and supplied by some other subcontractor, therefore, is not really an IBM's quality issue. I disagree.
Any parts that make up a 'ThinkPad' should still be rigorously tested and verified by IBM for quality assurance purposes even if they may not necessarily have been manufactured directly by IBM.
Overall, I'm extremely happy about my new T43 as all other parts are working great without any single defects apart from that annoying red dot. (Don't get me wrong. I've been a die-hard-fan of IBM since R32).
I'm just disappointed.
IBM Australia advised me that I would need another 10 dead pixels to be eligible for a replacement. Don't think so. I'll just live with it, however, if the same thing happened to you, you would be really bothered, I can tell you.
I now regret buying a 15" model. If I was able to change to another model, I'd definitely go for a 14" model. Sure, 15" FlexView is just great. The viewing angle is so fantastic. However, my guess is from quality point of view, 14" LCD's may be better.
The probability of getting a dead pixel?? million?? Don't think so. In just one month after T43 was first launched, there have been AT LEAST three people, including me, with at least one dead or stuck pixels on their BRAND NEW LCD screens.
I know I may be generallising too much here. However, when things like this happen not to someone else but to YOU, you would not be too pleased. It's not just a pleasant experience. But the most important thing is no other brand beats IBM. I still love it. It's a bit weird isn't it? IBM is that good.

Re: uhm
I totally understand you. Dead pixel problem is very frustrating and the manufacturer (not only IBM) really won't take it back unless at least 6 or more were detected. One dot in the middle of the screen on a $2200 machine is inacceptable in my opinion.sonoma wrote: The probability of getting a dead pixel?? million?? Don't think so. Dear manufacturers, please look at Asus, Zero Bright Dot warranty is nice. It will replace the machine for you even a dead pixel is detected.

I believe that if you buy a notebook direct from IBM, you can return it for any reason within 30 days. This applies to sales in the U.S., and I do not know how it works for overseas sales.
