What's the difference between these two T42s

#1 Post by Cowman » Fri Apr 08, 2005 2:31 pm

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 044&depa=3

and

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 058&depa=3

The only difference I can see is the cheaper one has a 3 year warantee and the more expensive one has a 1 year warantee. But... that doesn't make sense if they're identical for the one with the longer warantee to be cheaper.

Also, is the 2379DXU a good deal at $1,775.00? Anywhere I can get one cheaper(academic discount or other)?

Actually, the cheaper one has the 3 year warranty, other than that, they are identical.

You can get the 2379DXU for $1646 at one of the credit card sites like this one:
Discover Card IBM discount

There is a similar discount from Mastercard.

Advantage of ordering directly from IBM is that you have a 30 day no restrictions return policy. You didn't state where you are located, so you may not have to pay sales tax from Newegg. The total price might be a wash, but you may have to pay a restocking fee from Newegg if you decide to return it.

edit - Oops, I just saw your location updated. Even with IL sales tax, you will save a few dollars over Newegg with the credit card discount.

If you know an IBM employee, you can save a couple of hundred dollars more for this model through the Employee Purchase Program.

Newegg is a great store for computer parts, but I would not buy a notebook or LCD display from them.

Newegg will not allow you to return an item for dead or stuck pixels without paying a large restocking fee. You could get really really screwed if you get a machine with a stuck pixel smack in the center fo the display.

Either buy from Bill (with pixel check) or IBM. With so many LCDs shipped with bad pixels these days, its better to pay a bit more $ for peace of mind.

I can highly recommend buying from Bill, best computer transaction I've ever had - will definitely buy again in the future.

Pixel check is also really worthwhile, with however many millions of transistors on a 1400X1050 screen, its a small price to pay for perfection.

Wow, they refuse to take back a product that's defective? I can't believe they can get away with that. So what if a pixel is small, it's still a defective component!

For what its worth, i bought my T42 from Newegg (FVU). Fortunately i got a good machine with no dead pixels or anything like that....just my experience.

IBM spec only guarantees less than like 11 or so dead pixels on SXGA+. 1 dead is not considered defective. That's why I only buy LCD's or laptops from no questions asked returns retailers.
