T43 (Type 1871-6SU) slow to boot and slow to close

#1 Post by cigtoxdoc » Sat Nov 19, 2011 9:09 pm

I had to get my T43 back from one of my assistants. I have uninstalled much of the unauthorized software, but T43 takes for ever to boot-up and do a shutdown/restart. There are all sorts of items in the "Startup" and "Services" list. I would post if I could make copies of the listings. What are the files and services required by the T43 (OS = Win XP Pro SP3)? For example, there are Microsoft services, services with IBM in the path, and those with ThinkPad in the path. Which ones are really needed and which ones are slowing the system down. AV = is VIPRE and has the latest updates. I defraged the hard drive and done a full chkdsk.

Thank you,

John

Blackviper's website gives you all the gory details about XP/SP3 services.

Thank you for your help. I took out some uneeded services. Here are some metrics from the beginning of a restart after closing all foreground applications to where the T43 is ready to start a foreground application.

5:00 from intiation of restart to complete shutdown and beginning of start up

0:50 to point where password can be entered

2:07 after password entry to point where start program is functional

Are my times excessive?

John
