Unknown IBM speakers

#1 Post by emeraldgirl08 » Thu Nov 24, 2011 11:43 am

Happy Turkey Day to peeps who are ready to give thanks and eat well today!

I was looking through some of my things last night and I forgot I had these speakers. I do not know what happened to the power supply and am wondering if anyone knows what model these speakers are and what type of power supply it will take. I tried looking but there are no identifying model numbers just four digits that are stamped on the bottom- 6296. If I can just figure out what type of AC adapter to get I will get one on Fleabay.

If anyone can assist I'd greatly appreciate it! TIA.

You need a 12 volt transformer. They are available with a mass of different heads to fit just about anything.

BTW, some people these days call them adapters.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday!

I did manage to find a little information through google images. I think I'm just going to give them to Goodwill. If anyone would want them I'd sell them. The input jack has to be played with a bit for the left speaker to work however. Could be a broken wire or a slight detachment from the little circuit board. At any rate they do sound surprisingly good (two way- woofer and tweeter) and are robust :)

The info I found is here.

Forgot to say thanks Killer!!! Have a good weekend :)

Try fitting a nonpowered 16V ThinkPad plug (5.5/2.5 mm). If it fits, but not tight, then the socket is probably 5.5 mm OD 2.1 mm ID, which is very common in small always-on boxes (like network boxes and TV tuners). Specifically, consumer Netgear equipment uses 12 Volts through 5.5/2.1 plugs, so a Netgear-branded AC adapter will be easy to find.

Dear emeraldgirl08: Those speakers are really good quality. They used to be be shipped with the IBM Aptiva range of desktop computers. From memory there was a double-lead that went from the back of the CPU to the (IIRC) right side, powered, speaker which also acted as an amplifier. From that speaker there was a single lead to the left hand speaker. (I hope this makes sense. )

All you need to operate them are the correct leads and an AC adapter (as they are known these days), which is basically a transformer from AC 230 volts (or AC 110 volts in north America) to DC 12 volts.

Any good, local electrical retailer should be able to supply the few, very cheap, bits that you require ... or make them up from bits that they have lying around.

I wish I had kept the ones I had ... probably around the year that you were born.
