Thinkpad Dock II 2877-10U, is it worth it? Linux support?

#1 Post by NaT » Fri Apr 08, 2005 11:54 pm

Anyone is using Thinkpad Dock II? I plan to use it with T42p and T43p, it has been out for a while (2 years) and costs around $280-$400. Is it worth it?

I am tired of plugging in and out cables of notebooks. My notebook look like octopus now with external USB devices, Ethernet, power, firewire on PCMCIA,...

2) How about its permance? Is it gain or loss anything?

3) My major concern also is Linux support. IBM website 2 years ago said Dock II does not support Linux but this is just a passthrough connection, isn't it? Any one have tried it before? Dock II doesn't requires any driver, does it? Why does it has to do with Linux support?

It is definitely worth it, one of the main reasons I stuck with IBM is that they still offer Docks & Port Replicators. Most are moving away from it and I still think they are extremely convenient. HOWEVER, it still says on the website that Linux is not supported. There must be a reason for it, but I don't use Linux so I haven't a clue why. FWIW, I picked mine up off eBay for $162 shipped, so you needed not give IBM $300 if you want one.

I would suggest you to get a mini dock instead... unless you really need to use the PCMCIA card.... mini dock is about half of the price of the regular dock. Just got one a week ago.. and loving it... no more cables to move around
