External DVD-RW suggestion to go with X220

#1 Post by hyde » Mon Nov 28, 2011 5:06 pm

Does anyone use external USB DVD writer? I am getting ready to order my dock, and I would like to get an external drive so I can have it available in the office if needed.
If anyone uses one, suggestions would be appreciated. I am also concerned about ease of unmounting/mounting. I don't want stubborn drive to hang my undocking processes. The only way to get the right one is the one that fellow X220 users (preferably the ones with dock) use.

This one seem to have very good reviews:

Thanks!

Probably not much help, but I got the Lenovo Ultrabase Series 3 for my X220 and the Lenovo DVD-RW to go with it. I have also used a Lite-On external DVD-RW drive (probably about 3 years old) with this X220 via USB 2 without any problems.

If you don't mind rebates, you can get a BD Drive for a few bucks more. I think it comes with PowerDVD, which is good, as there's no freeware BD playback software.

I have w Panasonic UJ-240 that I slapped together with a case I bought on eBay. It's given me no trouble.

Ahh, I saw a few BD drives, but they were all very expensive, never came across the Asus you linked. And of course it is now out of stock. I also heard horror stories about Asus rebates, but it would have been worth the risk.

Gomjabber, I am going with Thinkpad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (433810U).

I just got a used Lenovo external drive.
I tink I paid about $20.00 for it on Ebay (there are plenty of them available) and it works flawlessly. Plus, it matches the ThinkPad finish perfectly.

I couldn't find Lenovo external hard drive (I was buying a package from Amazon) do you have a model #?
I already ordered Buffalo external hard drive, it looked sturdy and had good reviews, but if I have any problems or like the Lenovo drive better, I can swap it because Buffalo still has not been shipped..

In a similar thread at Notebook Review I saw this drive which looks inviting (although sold out atm).

Plextor used to make a sleek model, but it's been discontinued, although still available on EBay and possibly other places...

Its current model is a standard tray loading one...

But there didn't seem to be much advancement for consumer optical drives in the past few years, in particular for DVD+/-RW, so to me they're more or less the same. I would avoid the bargain basement unless one comes with reasonable warranty though.

Cheers.

I burned about 10 DVD-R's and no problems and speed is pretty good with Buffalo.
