NFTS Regular Format?

#1 Post by JohnD » Sat Apr 09, 2005 4:31 am

I was wondeirng, if anyone know to set "Regular" NFTS format instead of using "Quick" NTFS format when using the IBM Rescue and Recovery in Factory Mode. My theory is : When it use quick NTFS format and later run CHKDSK. It (CHKDSK) gives me error about "Windows found problem with the file system", so running "Regular" NFTS format might fix this issue. I tried running SpinRite 6.0 and everything checks out fine. Thank you Leon for the information on SpinRite 6.0 becuase it help my desktop hard drive. BTW, I own a ThinkPad T42.

From Windows website: (reference)
"When you choose to run a regular format on a volume, files are removed from the volume that you are formatting and the hard disk is scanned for bad sectors. The scan for bad sectors is responsible for the majority of the time that it takes to format a volume.

If you choose the Quick format option, format removes files from the partition, but does not scan the disk for bad sectors. Only use this option if your hard disk has been previously formatted and you are sure that your hard disk is not damaged."

I'm guessing this is the answer to my problem or is there a simple way?

It does not take a lot of time in the scheme of things to do a regular format, so I always elect to do the regular format and go from there.

Well, the problem is that I can not select regular NFTS format becuase there is "no" options to do it. IBM Rescue and Recovery auto does it in factory mode in Quick NFTS Format so I can only watch with no choice.
- Thx for the response!

I can only guess that R&R assumes it was done right originally. I don't use R&R so I don't know. ... JD Hurst

If you have a Product like Partition Magic, you can do a full NFTS format.
