New W520 on the way, need to add AT&T 3G
Just purchased an X1 for the field and a new W520 to replace home laptop as my VP is getting it.
The unit lacks the 3G module I will need on occasion and want to know if it can be added by me. Also which model to get. Will there be an available slot inside this W520 for the module
The new W520 is configured as follows:
Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Edition
Intel Quad Core Extreme i7-2920XM @ 2.5ghz (3.5 Turbo) 1333mhz/8MB cache
16GB PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3 (4 x 4GB) 16GB Max
Nvidia Quadro 2000M Graphics with 2GB DDR3 Memory
15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) LED Backlit Widescreen and WWAN antenna (95% color gamut, anti-glare)
720p Integrated Camera
240GB Solid State SSD OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III Hard Drive (550/500)
X-Rite Pantone Color Sensor
Smartcard Reader
Intel Centrino Advanced-N WiFi 6205
8x DVD/RW Dual Layer Burner
UltraNav TrackPoint with Fingerprint Reader and Touchpad
4 in 1 Media Reader and Modem (SD, MMC, SDHC, SDXC)
Bluetooth 3.0
Wireless Broadband (WWAN) 3G upgradeable
9-cell Lithium Ion battery
Genuine 3 Year Lenovo Depot Warranty (International Warranty Model Type 4276)
Will this module be just a matter of plugging it in an empty slot?
Thanks

Re: New W520 on the way, need to add AT&T 3G
hi Greg;
I have Gobi 3000- from Lenovo ($125.00US last time I checked)
Just make sure you have a SIM from ATT(often they give u that free)Also have Gobi 2000 - that I kept from my older T& W510 series laptops (both ONLY DO 3g; and not 4G) for 4G = I use SPRINT DONGLE
They both work fine , and I never even had to do anything - just install ( press F1 for Bios upodate) and then Windows 7 ..instaleld everything else.
Afterwards - some months later - when I can SYSTEM UPDATE - I saw it updated the newer Drivers for ACCESS CONNECTION(which i dont use) and others ....
Hope this is helpfull
\Cheers

Did you install it yourself? I have installed drives and RAM but have no idea where this card/module even goes inside the beast.ausmike wrote:hi Greg;

Yips ... HMM shows those if you not famalier with where things are
There are heaps of Youtube Videos and "videos" at Lenovo website also. Might be good idea to search around
install is via "Easy Access Window" @ back ...a plate with two screws
or via EXPRESS CARD slot (if you are MIL SPEC person) etc etc...
Thinkpads are EASY PEEZY to install Gobi 3000 _ (mine can also fo Sprint with that samecard - but I prefer to use the Sprint dongle)
Cheers
