board swap T61>T60 and T60>T61

#1 Post by TuuS » Fri Dec 02, 2011 10:45 am

I need some advice from our T60 gurus here. I have a T60p with 15" flexview and was contemplating installing a T61 system board. It's my understanding that a 4:3 fullscreen T61 board will fit. I assumed it meant these units were built on the same chassis, but I can see that's not the case, the T60p is a good bit larger then the T61 with 14" full screen. If I can install the T61 board in the T60p, would I be able to install the T60p board in the t61 as well?

The T60 15" board is not really larger, but is simply a T60 14.1" mainboard with an additional interposer card to make it fit into the 15" chassis. You will need to reuse this interposer card when you build in the T61 board. The old T60 board without the interposer card will fit into the T61 chassis. It is almost a straight swap, but you will have to saw away one of the mounting holes for the modem card on both structure frames.

I have done that already multiple times based on information i found here on this forum from people who did it before me. Check out http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 07#p620807 for some good links to pictures. While you are at it, the complete thread which contains this single posting is full of great information. It's worth a read from top to bottom!

Thank you very much.

I'll do my research before I begin. I'm also keeping my eye out for a rechipped T61p board for a good price. It seems that going from the 256mb ATI fireGL to intel integrated would be a step backwards, but the 8GB of ram and SATA would more then make up, but a good deal on a "good" nvidia board would be sweet. The problem is they didn't put the good chip on that board that I'm aware of, so it would have to be one that was rechipped, and done right...

I had made the swaps: 15" 4:3 T60p <=> T61 4:3. T60p mobo will fit into T61 chassis, you need to do the same procedure as it is for swapping T61 mobo into T60p chassis, i.e. to file those two screw holes near the modem card.
