BSOD NMI Parity Check/Memory Parity Error [Thinkpad t61]

#1 Post by Dawnbreaker » Sun Dec 04, 2011 10:26 am

Strangely Windows 7 worked like a charm for few months, but for the past 10 or 15 days it's giving me the Parity Check error.
First, I checked my hardware temperatures (just in case something is overheating), but everything seems to be okay - it's about 50-55C for every component. Second I scanned my whole computer for viruses, nothing was detected. I also ran memtest86+ for about 5 passes (2.5-3 hours) - no errors.
And the last thing I did was I updated my BIOS to the newest version today.

What could cause the problem, and shall I run memtest86+ for about 7-8 hours?

2 Passes per module should be enough.
Did you test RAM individually and each module in both slots?
Clean the gold contacts with a rubber eraser. Clean off rubble before reinserting.

Unfortunately I don't know how to open up my thinkpad, I'm afraid I could break something or so... so it could be a cleaning issue?

Download the (illustrated) manual here; if your T61 has a
14.1" standard 4:3 LCD: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-67979
14.1" widescreen LCD: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-67760
15.4" widescreen LCD: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail. ... MIGR-67980

In either case you need to only remove the palm rest (also known as front keyboard bezel) to get at the memory.

Okay this is driving me crazy. Since I've updated the BIOS last week my T61 worked like a charm for a week, and then the stupid BSOD appeared again. Obviously it's not a RAM problem, so I'm thinking about the Nvidia. The diode shows no overheating - it's about 52-53C, which is normal temperature for GPU I guess? Any help would be highly appreciated.

Try running the machine with only 1 RAM module until it BSOD's. If after 10 days you still have no BSOD, run it with just the other RAM module.
Do you have TurboMem in your machine?
If so, remove it and then see what happens.
I've had several T61 problems only because of bad TurboMem.
