Android on x61t
EDIT: much deletia.
my current build can be got here:
http://www.sendspace.com/folder/hxgfwv
and make a liveusb if you like:
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
pen works.
sound works.
gmail/gtalk/gvoice and market work.
02/09/12:
- force gpu enabled by default
- added intel 4695 wireless to kernel
- repo sync - android-x86 superuser + filemanager apps
- updated gapps-ics-20120207-signed.zip from http://goo-inside.me
still issues with sleep and red bezel flashing.

Re: Android on x61t
good to see you too old friend!
some small progress, I got google framework and apps installed - problem is, it works initially but then framework crashes (e.g. market runs and works normally but only for less than a minute) so there's more to figure out...
also I went ahead and installed to HD including allowing it a fake 2gb SD card image (for some reason the actual SD slot is not recognized, this will also take some work - it is reported to work in model-specific releases but again this is the generic one)
anyway, some brief steps for anyone that wants to try this too:

Code: Select all
get cyanogenmod v7 gapps from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version (gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip as of this writing)
unzip system folder out of the zipfile and put it somewhere
connect to the thinkpad with adb and push the system folder over (you'll need to know the IP address of the thinkpad)
adb connect 10.0.1.101
adb push d:\somewhere\system /system
reboot the thinkpad
go away.

Re: Android on x61t
O, also also - the drivers for the wacom tablet are not present in /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/
so, lazy me will either have to build them or request the gods of android-x86 to include it in their build (not sure why they didn't just include all tablet related modules, they did make sure to enable more than a few already)
at least building won't require crazy crosscompile toolchain or anything
EDIT: meh, getting the ICS source (http://www.android-x86.org/getsourcecode) and will just build myself... /EDIT

Re: Android on x61t
what wireless chip do you have? mine is intel 3945 (I think) and worked in every android I tried.woomaa wrote:In ICS wifi does not work on my X61t. 3.2 Works fine wifi& market. waiting for touchWhy no one does not making 12in tablets with sxga???
lately I installed ICS to the hard drive - I did not end up building myself, but used most recent asus_laptop of 4.0. however, sound does not work. but market works perfectly. EDIT: and all the gapps are there or can be got from market, and all of those work great too /EDIT
(sound works fine with "generic" image of 2.2, 3.2, 4.0, but market does not.)
I think eventually the digitizer tablet (and touch) and the sound will be fixed, but not too soon since the developers put priority on other devices.

Re: Android on x61t
My wifi is intel 3954. In 3.2 there is no sound. In ICS I didn't tested sound.
I also think that digitizer and sound will work in longer time. With thist two fixes is perfect system. I'm very astonished by fact, that no one started making 10-12 inch 3:4 tablets with digitizer and fingers. It would be an perfect system for work.
I won't buy 16:9 device - it is good only for multimedia, not for work.

Re: Android on x61t
as mentioned here http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 86&start=0
someone has started making their own builds for x41t (main problem seemed to be that the default toolchain offered/recommended by google is SSE3-only, but 99% of everything apparently works fine if you build as SSE2 instead you just need the right toolchain and build options) - they also got sound (using patches that are going into main releases as well) and wacom driver (this may take longer to make it to main releases) working, apparently.
I tried the x41t build on my x61t, mainly to see if the digitzer worked, but it did not. this could simply be different hardware id, even though it is a very similar wacom device? did not check to see if sound worked, but I am much less worried about that, it will definitely come soon in official builds.

Re: Android on x61t
was out sick for a bit but got some custom builds done today, with good success:
- pen works
- sound works
- added in gapps 403v11: market works, gmail/gtalk/gvoice work.
issues:
- get only white screen on some applications, fix is to enable
Settings->Developer options->Force GPU
but need to figure how to do that at build/boot time rather than post-install.
- need to mess with build.prop fingerprint to get more apps in market
- need to find somewhere to upload the iso ^_^

Nice. Would be great if you could share with us. I'd like to try it out.. Preferably with Dual/Triple boot? Thoughts?tarvoke wrote:was out sick for a bit but got some custom builds done today, with good success:

yeah, sorry about that... the intention was always to share, of course. but seems like filesharing places being shut down left and right - I just now set up a sendspace account, but thanks to their "tools" I can't simply upload from my build server - have to download to my desktop and then re-upload to sendspace, so it's going to be about an hour until it's available.

Re: Android on x61t
also there is no really good multi-boot method yet aside from crude effort. if you have a windows install, the android grub installer notices and asks if you want to include it. but it did not notice at all that I also had a linux partition.
I ended up taking the android grub bits, making a 40_custom setup in ubuntu, and then updating ubuntu's grub to mbr (which also took care of windows). annoying.
so, yeah, not-pretty.
also-also, the disk-setup in the android-install seemed a little broken, i.e. would crash really touchy about cylinder boundaries etc. so maybe better to set up all your partitions elsewhere e.g. boot a live cd/usb with gparted.

I am wondering if I could use it as a QUICKBOOT OS.. for quick tasks at times. So a clear & safe way to multiboot setup would be great.tarvoke wrote:also there is no really good multi-boot method yet aside from crude effort. if you have a windows install, the android grub installer notices and asks if you want to include it. but it did not notice at all that I also had a linux partition.

Or I wonder if I might boot it from a small USB pen drive?

(NB: ISO build now linked in original post above, share and enjoy)
of course you can boot from a pen drive, that is what unetbootin will give you. (simply change preferred boot order in BIOS, or else F12 at start and manually select)
you can also do a full install to SD slot or USB, but you'll need to be sure the machine will boot from those (SD, no, unless you have the main sata disk bootloader, e.g. grub, setup to boot the SD; USB, sure, either have the BIOS prefer it as boot or else have the main disk bootloader entry for it or press F12 etc.)

Re: Android on x61t
I tried it on my x61t. Is there something I have to do to get the pen to work? I got the bluetooth to work by modprobing thinkpad_acpi. Any chance the iwl4965 driver can be included as well?
Edit: Scratch the first part, on a reboot with the wireless switch on apparently the modules loaded automatically. Still no wireless network though.
Edit 2: On the third reboot the pen didn't work again, maybe it's more reliable when installed to the hard drive, but I'm not going to try that unless the networking works.

Re: Android on x61t
Wireless works great.
Apparently the pen working that one time was just pure luck since I tried 3 boots and it didn't work in any case. Is there anything I can do to either manually initiate the detection or otherwise provide debugging information to you?
One other thing I noticed: Isn't the windows key supposed to act as the home button in Android? At least the Andorid x86 VM I have on my desktop seems to do this, but I installed that awhile back.
Edit: A few more issues:

- Tablet rotate button doesn't seem to do anything.
- It seems like anything that would involve streaming multimedia doesn't work. At least I tried playing a video from youtube (website, app crashed, but I think you knew about that?) and the pandora app.

haven't really tested the bezel button keycodes yet - by default it has the ones from Stefan's x41t image, not sure if those match up exactly to x61 or what.
pen working once and then never working is certainly odd. not sure how much help I can offer there other than do the usual debugging (and does the pen work consistently under another linux?) - do you have a different screen (touch, sxga, etc.)

and:
- looks like the rotate button is currently mapped to "home"
- I put the hdaps rotation control in my latest build (not posted yet) but it does not seem to work
- all the usual emulator "phone" keys (f5 f6 win home etc.) have been disabled by default in the main code for a while now I think?
- youtube, there are some issues - see Stefan's post http://groups.google.com/group/android- ... 4ab3657d7c (not sure if that relates to Pandora, but Pandora does not work for me either)

New issue: Mute button doesn't work.
Edit: Almost forgot to mention, the sdcard slot doesn't seem to work optimally. It recognizes the card and mounts it to /mnt/USB/, but the OS doesn't seem to provide any interface for unmounting or otherwise using it.
I tried running `dmesg | grep wacom` and I'm getting 'input: wacom-input as /devices/virtual/input/input10' which doesn't exist as far as I can tell.

Pen works fine in Kubuntu as well as in the GParted Live CD. I have an SXGA+ panel so the digitizer may respond a little differently.tarvoke wrote:pen working once and then never working is certainly odd. not sure how much help I can offer there other than do the usual debugging (and does the pen work consistently under another linux?) - do you have a different screen (touch, sxga, etc.)

Maybe, having the the windows key act as the home button seemed fairly entuitive to me so I'm not sure why that was disabled. I wonder how commercial tablets handle these keys?tarvoke wrote:- all the usual emulator "phone" keys (f5 f6 win home etc.) have been disabled by default in the main code for a while now I think?

Hey, great work on this! I've been trying this out by dual-booting this and Windows with the included grub bootloader. I'm using Tapatalk from the X61t to type this.
I'm having a bit of trouble pushing gapps to the laptop. I get adb connected and running over WiFi, but when I tell it to push, I get an error saying the system is read only. When I try to use the adb shell to set the system to r/w, I get a permission denied message.
Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?
I've also had several installed apps refuse to run, giving the message "Unfortunately (app name) has stopped." Is there anything I can do about this?
Thanks! If I get this working really well, I might have to find an SXGA+ multitouch screen for this.

I have the Sierra Wwan Module ( http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Sierra_Wi ... HSDPA_WWAN). Any chance to get this working with Android for my X61t?
Thanks again for this great work.

Wow, I am very intrigued. Has anyone run on this on a non tablet x61?

I'm still using this for my X61t. It works good. Has anyone build a tun.ko for it?
