Do we need a separate wireless forum?

#1 Post by kjarrett » Sun Apr 10, 2005 12:14 pm

I'm jonesin' to write a post here to tell you about how my Hawking Hi-Gain 6dBi Omni-Directional Wireless Antenna (obtained from Buy.com for FREE after rebate) has really boosted my wifi reception TREMENDOUSLY ... but ... it's not Txx specific and I think it will get lost/ignored in the Off Topic forum. However, splitting wireless chats off into a separate area has it's negatives too.

So, my question remains ... see the poll. What do y'all think?

As much as I'd like to see a WiFi specific Forum, I feel we're getting a bit top-heavy WRT adding Forums.

I'd prefer to see a "Pimp my Thinkpad" Forum where we could discuss everything about getting the best out of our machines, such as processor upgrades, adding internal WiFi to machines that didn't come with it, memory upgrades not supported by IBM, overclocking, painting the cases, etc., etc.

Regards,

I agree, and personally, I'd like to be able to keep the posts in the Txx section ... but I also want to be cognizant of the rules, and discussing a piece of wireless equipment that might be used with ANY computer doesn't seem to fit ... knowwhutImean?

So, for the record, I will vote NO, we don't need a separate wireless forum!

Wireless hardware, software, anywhere, begs for it's own separate wireless forum. Pimping a Thinkpad has been on-going, wireless is consuming us, we need a click for easy wireless access.

Thinkpads.com doesn't need any more topic-sections in my opinion.

Step up and vote people, nothings changing without your voices.

It is interesting with all the viewing of this poll, few people have bothered to vote, yet, each day thinkpads.com has numerous questions about wireless scattered across the spectrum. Most of the questions and answers are not specific to a TP model, but for us to assemble wireless issues together we must cross dozens of topics.
Yes, I need a separate TP Wireless section!
Consider also, if we can have a section for PHOTOS of TPs, well, we should be provided with a section on the fastest growing segment of the industry.
The only constant in my life: change. Norm Mike

If there's one thing I can't stand, it's apathy. Just kidding folks, guess I should have added an option for "doesn't matter to me" or something like that. Ah, hindsight...

i voted yes, but........

what about a seperate forum that was like james said, a "pimp my thinkpad" forum.

specificly for tips/tricks/awesomeness that your parents warned you about when you were a kid. id love to see how you could tweak a thinkpad even more (i couldnt imagine making it better than ibm already has, other than making it free of course :D).

and while id like to say it should be a forum for all thinkpad models, i wonder if you could do the same tweaks to increase a t42's wireless range to an x40?

i dont know their hardware differences, but i still think we should have a "pimp my thinkpad forum" thats either cosmetic, surgical (internal/hardware), or a personality (software) change that can make them even greater.

p.s. howd you boost your wireless with the antenna? did you have to do something special, or did you just plug it in and use it?

p.s.2. im excited about the thought of the new forum, i want/need to hear more improvements to the thinkpad!!!! (i also need to buy one first :D)

I voted no.
For me, the fewer forums to read, the better.

the terms "pimp" and "ThinkPad" do not seem to go together, i think..
so that one is a non-starter..

also, i think, if a new confrence is to start, one little used confrence should be terminated..

I vote no on a seperate wireless forum here. Wireless forums at
www.BroadbandReports.com fill my needs in that area.
IBM T42 2373M3U - that's broken and needs to be replaced

I agree with Esteban, wireless & networking is basically the same with all notebooks (yes, I know IBM has its own program to control wireless access). There are plenty of wireless specific forums if you really need help.

I vote yes but understand the aruments against it.

Even more importantly - do you mean you hooked that antenna up to your t42? If so, could you explain? I didn't think the t's had any rf connectors except the internal ones going to the built in antennas.

Hey guys,

Since many have asked ... the Hawking antenna replaces the one on the router, in my case, a DLink DI-624. It is located in my basement, which is not optimal, but the only option for me. I now get a solid 100% connection everywhere in my house, where I once got as low as 50-60%, and outside my house the signal is now a solid 85% (where I usually work). I haven't walked the property yet, but I am seriously thrilled with the performance gains, for a FREE antenna, it was absolutely the best upgrade I've done to my home PC setup in a long, long time!
