Inexpensive accomodation in NYC; Jan. 15-Feb. 15?

#1 Post by Johan » Sat Dec 17, 2011 4:42 pm

I'm interested to hear if any forum members are able to suggest (relatively) inexpensive accomodation for one (female, 50 yo) person in NYC during approx. Jan. 15-Feb. 15? Something, like a shared flat or a room for rent with kitchen and bath (either own or access to), would be of interest; preferably either directly Manhattan or in the close urban area (e.g. Brooklyn), with relatively easy/fast access to New York New School (on central Manhattan). A quiet environment - if possible (and with a desk to work at etc.) - would be perfect, while great luxury is not a must, and bed-bugs are also not!

Any suggestions about where to find such not-too-expensive accomodation would be very much appreciated - thanks very much in advance!

My daughter and husband booked a room for the four of us including her young brother in law a couple of years ago at the Affinia Shelburne in Manhattan. It was pretty nice, it was convenient, and she got good rates at the time.

Finding an apartment room would be the least expensive. I had to live in NYC for a month in Oct 2007, to do some experiments at Columbia University. Through Craigslist, I found a guy who was subletting one of his rooms for a month for $1,000, including utilities. That apartment was just 5-minute walk from Columbia.

Alternatively, you may get a decent hotel deal through priceline.com, where you can name your own price. Johan, remember that we got together for lunch back in May 2009? I was in NYC for 6 nights to see some concerts and used Priceline to find a two-star hotel room on 39th Street for $117.90 per night including all taxes and fees.

As far as hotels, I have had good luck directing people towards Hotel 17. Located on 17th Street and 2nd Avenue, a nice quiet street but right in the thick of it. It's a very quiet hotel that usually attracts young tourists from Europe. Bathrooms are shared but clean and I've never seen anyone in them. No food, but you're in downtown New York - you can find food.

That said, it won't be cheap for a month. Finding a sublet would be best.

@ GomJabbar: Thanks for the link, but a one-month stay in a hotel is unfortunately going to be (quite!) a tad on the high end (the cost will be more than $ 4.500!), compared to what I was/am looking for...

@ pianowizard: Thanks for the pointer as well, Kwoon, and of course I recall when we met in New York. I agree with you that finding an apartment (shared or not) is probably going to be cheapest - for a one month stay - but browsing the internet gives a huge number of hits, so I had hoped that someone perhaps had some specific suggestion(s).

@ j-dawg: Thanks to you too, for the suggestion - but again, a hotel is very expensive to stay in for a whole month. I'm Googl'ing for sublets; never heard of it before, but the first hit that comes up --> Sublet.com is absolutely interesting; I'm surely going to look into that! :-)
