Fresh Install xp Problem:"Ethernet Controller & PCI Modem"

#1 Post by thebigarniedog » Sun Dec 25, 2011 9:39 pm

ThinkPad T42 (2373-R93)
Based on 2373-6UU: P M 715, 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 32MB ATI Radeon 7500, 24x-8x DVD, Wireless upgradeable(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip, 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP

This has been a real nightmare. Nasty virus caused me to reinstall xp. On Device Manager, the yellow question mark under "Other Devices" with yellow "Ethernet Controller" and "PCI Modem" sub categories lit in yellow as well. I have tried to upload new driver's from Lenova's page with no luck (via some other postings). I have no use of the wireless card as a result.

I could really use some detailed step by step help here. Thank you in advance.

Well, your machine left the factory as "wireless upgradeable" which means with no card installed, but with antennae in place. Have you installed a wireless card in there, and if so, which one?

Do you have wired (LAN) connection currently working, or not?

I tracked down the atheros driver and now it is no longer in yellow. Now for the PCI MODEM which is still in yellow. FWIW, the prior owner installed the mini atheros card. I found a different post referencing a program called "unknown devices" that identifies the name of this Tooefage.
