radeon video card for X41

#1 Post by zeebests » Fri Jan 06, 2012 5:13 am

Does anyone know the exact radeon card that can be added to the X41. I think it is a 16mb mobility card but would like to know the identification number etc so I can find one on ebay or whatever. Also, does anyonr know if this will increase the ability of the x41 to play games? Thanks

You cannot change the graphics card in an X41, it is integrated in the motherboard.
That laptop is not suited for playing games.
IBM made Business laptops.
If you want to game on a laptop, get yourself an Alienware laptop.

Thanks for that reply. I read on another site that a mobility radeon card could be added but stand corrected. Anyhow, i guess that 16mb of video card is pretty measly these days

Remember, this laptop was introduced in early 2005. Seven years ago. It was pretty good for a business system back then, and as long as you are forgiving (and not a power user) it still is a good system.

The X41 doesn't even have a display card in the traditional sense - It's built-in to the chipset (the 915 series, IIRC).

AFAIK, for 2D operations, you don't need a lot of RAM, as long as there're enough to cover the framebuffer, and 16MB is already A LOT.

See http://superuser.com/questions/256932/h ... quirements

Besides, the 915 draws memory for its display from the main memory, up to 128MB IIRC.

You aren't considering playing the latest 3D games on this machine, right...?

Cheers.

I wouldn't necessarily jump to that conclusion for all Thinkpads, though I probably would for the X41.

My X24 has the 8MB Radeon, and it's a lot more capable than I'd expect. I rarely bothered to try gaming on it, but it could handle Half-Life at a decent frame rate. GTA and GTA2, admittedly not demanding games, play perfectly well.

The T61p I'm typing this on is also usable for gaming. I recently played through Deus Ex Human Revolution on it (everything at the lowest settings, of course), and frame rates were good.

i have other laptops but i'll be honest i never use 'em

You are surely no need to upgrade your video display card for 3 reasons.

1. X3100 integrated display card share much bigger memory than 16m Radeon on it's ancestors. Which makes X41 video performance much better than X3 series.

2. X41 is very well balanced for mobile business use. No for gaming. If saying the weak point, the bottom neck is hard disc data transfer rate. As long as you have a good quality OEM PATA SSD disc, it will boost your X41 a good level.

3. Any such kind of upgrade would cost as much as half second hand X41 prices. X3100 is on board south bridge main chip integrated function. Not possible to build another one.

We all know that TPer all thinking of upgrade of old model as we love these little good quality NB. They have imperfections, these makes them closest to perfection.

Intel X3100 is used on Intel 965 chipset which are found on T61 laptops, not X41.
X41 has Intel GMA900 which is part of Intel 915 Northbridge, NOT Southbridge. Even though GMA900 "has" 128MB of RAM, in most graphic applications, 16MB Radeon 7000 is still in the same league.
