Seeking X-31 replacement
I've been using my X-31 for a bunch of years & love it. It's a great size, weight, and it's durable.
It is however getting a little old & I thought I'd begin the search for a replacement.
I'm not likely to be looking for a brand new unit, just something that will be quicker than the X-31.
I think the program that is hardest on it is the antivirus program. For most other software using an older version is fine, but for AV & web browser security concerns dictate using the latest versions, which are beginning to bog my system down.
Is there a site, or page with a chart of the IBM / Lenovo laptops through the years?
Or perhaps you can suggest a unit (or 2) that I might consider.
No larger than the 12" screen please.

Re: Seeking X-31 replacement
X40/X41, Pentium M CPU, has 1.8" hard drives, odd and rather expensive, can be converted from PATA to SATA, can use ZIF drives, 16V AC Adapter
X60/X60s, Core Duo CPU, SATA drive, up to 4GB RAM (3.20 usable), 20V AC Adapter
X61/X61s, Core 2 Duo CPU, SATA drive, up to 8GB RAM, 20V AC Adapter
These are all 12.1" machines, evolutions of your X31.
They are also available as Tablets.
Plenty info on the forums, so please do some reading first.

Re: Seeking X-31 replacement
Thanks for the pointers.
I'm curious.. the specs you post all make sense as things I should be concerned about when shopping for a new unit, CPU, RAM & Hard drive, except the adapter voltage. Probably a silly question, but is this important in some way? Or were you just pointing out that I might be able to use my X31 adapter for the X40-41 units.?

Re: Seeking X-31 replacement
The X40/X41 uses the same adapter as your X31. These come in 16V/56W and 16V/72W, both will work fine.
The X6x adapters wont fit in X4x/X3x and v.v. These come in 20V/65W and 20V/90W, both will work fine.
People using other (non IBM/Lenovo) brands, that are lookalikes, even with the same plugs, but different voltages, have killed their laptops within seconds.
So voltage is VERY important.

Re: Seeking X-31 replacement
I would not bother changing an X31 to an X40/X41. Too small of an upgrade, if at all.

Re: Seeking X-31 replacement
That was my thought.. My x31 was made in 2004, I was thinking something from 2008 or 9 would make a noticable difference in performance.
I'm not sure if there was a decline in the smaller (10" - 12") laptops about that time as the manufacturers began making the smaller 'netbooks'.
I try to keep from paying much attention to what's available, except when I'm thinking of replacing something that isn't doing the job any longer. Otherwise I want new computers every 6 months as I see new features & more power.

Re: Seeking X-31 replacement
My choice to replace my X31, will be the X200s with the WXGA+ screen, which also gives you the lightest weight configuration with the 4-cell battery at "2.5 pounds."
I'd rather that Lenovo release a 10" featherweight X-series, but they've demonstrated no interest.

Re: Seeking X-31 replacement
Yes...the X200s meets your requirements. I have had the X200 and X200s and prefer the X200 as the screen is easier to read. The X200 is fast, almost as light, and the high capacity battery will last 5 hours very easy.

Re: Seeking X-31 replacement
Any machine X61/s or above would be a fine replacement. Due to built-in webcam options, I really like the X200/X201/X220 and X100e/X120e models (dual core models only). All are quite reasonably priced on the used market.
